This AmeriCorps project’s process and outcomes are to educate students, staff, and faculty about what is recyclable here in Spokane and present them with a broader view of the recycling lifecycle, at least locally, so constituents understand the social, economic, and environmental impacts that coincide with proper recycling. The project will also contribute to institutional and local government waste-reduction and recycling goals. The County has an impending target to divert 65% of waste by 2020 as identified in its most recent Comprehensive Solid Waste Management Plan approved by the Washington State Department of Ecology. Because of the nature of higher education student population turn-over, part of this project is to establish succession plans for recycling education and outreach within existing departments and student clubs so that education and outreach will continue past the conclusion of this AmeriCorps project. This position is contingent on funding. Applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received with interviews taking place until placement is filled.

Member Duties : The member will engage in a four-phase project to bring about consistent and prominent waste reduction and recycling education across the Spokane area, focusing on the higher education populations at GU, EWU, and CCS. The member will harmonize recycling and waste-reduction messaging between the campuses and the City and County to the maximum extent possible. Additionally, the member will act as a bridge between the campuses and relevant stakeholders by communicating and transferring practical methods and lessons to optimize waste-reduction best practices.
