$17.00 – $18.00 per hour

IslandWood’s Urban School Programs include programs at urban parks and schoolyards and at the Brightwater Center in Woodinville. Urban School Programs engage students in their home environments and dig deep into how built and natural systems work in tandem. Our programs seek to cultivate understanding of the complexity of urban systems to give learners the tools to generate solutions that lead to resilient, healthy, and thriving communities.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Urban School Program Educators teach set curricula to 3rd-8th grade students both in a classroom setting and in the field regarding stormwater, wastewater, engineering, and how humans interact with the ecosystems they are a part of. Urban School Program Educators are often engaged in partner teaching, collaborating, and problem solving to ensure that school groups receive a high-qualityprogram that attends to their learning needs.

Educators actively participate in program debriefs and assessment. This position is intentionally designed to offer space to grow as an educator through debriefing, scheduled professional development, staff observations, and feedback from a community of educators.

Educator work schedules vary and can be adapted to fit a changing schedule. Internet access is needed to check schedules and communicate with Urban School Programs staff. Access to car desirable but not required.

Responsibilities:

Provide high quality, culturally responsive instruction for 3rd – 8th grade students

Collaborate and teach with fellow educators in a small team environment

Actively participate in professional growth-oriented post-program debrief sessions

Set-up and clean-up before and after programs

Provide timely and professional communication with program staff

Commitment to learning and growing through feedback in an active learning community

Commitment to support IslandWood’s work towards equity, diversity and inclusion in the workplace

Required Qualifications:

Minimum 1 year experience teaching elementary and/or middle school youth

Ability to adapt teaching style to accommodate different audiences, ages, and learning styles

Experience successfully engaging youth across cultural and racial boundaries

Confidence managing groups of students in different settings

Ability to effectively communicate with all audiences in an inclusive and welcoming manner

Demonstrate IslandWood’s core values that enable teams and individuals to succeed with shared respect and purpose.

Desire to learn and teach about how urban environmental systems and communities intersect

Ability to respond professionally to a variety of situations that may arise quickly

Ability to stand and walk on uneven, steep terrain and lift up to 20 pounds

Maintain a current CPR/First Aid certification while employed

Must be able to comply with and maintain a drug-free work environment

Must pass child safety screening procedure; post-offer
