Position Description

Support BES’s Wetland lnventory Project (WlP) by conducting wetland determinations and functional assessments in Portland, Oregon. Primary duties require the ability to identify, record, and properly analyze dominant plant species, hydric soil indicators, and wetland hydrology indicators per the Army Corps of Engineers 1987 Wetland Delineation Manual and the Regional Supplement to the Corps of Engineers Wetland Delineation Manual: Western Mountains, Valleys and Coast Region. Additional duties include classifying wetlands, noting wetland habitat features, and identifying areas for investigation using aerial maps, soil surveys, the National Wetland inventory and other resources.

 

This is an excellent opportunity to network with environmental professionals within the city of Portland and accrue professional experience applicable to a Professional Wetland Scientist certification.

 

Position Schedule:

*         Temporary Full Time ( 40 hours/week)

*         Start Date: As soon as possible

*         End Date: June 2020

*         Compensation range: $18.00 to $24.00 depending on experience

*         This position is not benefit eligible.

Desired Skills and Experience:

*         Trained in wetland determination methodology by attending a 38-hour wetland delineation training course.

*         Experience conducting off-site wetland determinations and remote/desktop surveys.

*         Knowledge of wetland plants and plant communities found west of the Cascades.

*         Ability to key out unfamiliar plants to species.

*         Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS, specifically ArcMap.

*         Familiarity with ESRI Collector.

*         Familiarity with iPads/iOS and Tablets running Android OS.

*         Familiarity with Microsoft OneDrive and cloud computing.

*         Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Access to complete data management and analysis.

*         Strong sense of organization and responsibility.

To Qualify

 

The following minimum qualifications are required for this position:

  1. One or more years of professional experience conducting on-site wetland determinations using U.S. Army Corps of Engineers protocols.
  2. Ability to sight-identify common native and non-native plant species found in Portland.
  3. Ability to carry a backpack and shovel over rough terrain during inclement weather.
