Seeking a highly motivated, conservation-minded biological technician to assist in large scale habitat restoration and botanical projects on Camp Pendleton and throughout San Diego County, California. Successful applicants will conduct native habitat restoration techniques including but not limited to: implementation of non-native plant control, monitoring and surveying native species, identifying and mapping plant communities, collecting and spreading native seeds, and the construction of out-planting sites. Eradication, suppression, reduction, and management of invasive plant species will be implemented by chemical (herbicide) and manual methods in sensitive natural areas. Technicians will conduct protocol surveys for native and rare plants in riparian areas, dunes, coastal sage scrub, grasslands, and arid environments. Familiarity with GPS devices including Garmin and Trimble is preferred as technicians will utilize these to map the extent of project work. Occasionally camping and travel to other regions of California and the Southwestern USA may be required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Minimum BS or BA Degree in Environmental Biology, Botany, Ecology, or related fields.
  • Strong working knowledge of Southern California native flora.
  • Experience conducting vegetation surveys with qualitative and quantitative monitoring techniques.
  • Ability to research and develop new and innovative restoration techniques.
  • Capable of recording detailed and relevant field notes.
  • Ability to recognize non-native plant characteristics and typical species in our region.
  • Experience with invasive plant removal techniques, including mechanical (hand pulling, hand tools, brush cutters, etc) and chemical (herbicide, backpack sprayers, and truck-mounted tank sprayers).
  • California Qualified Applicator Certificate (QAC) will be given priority (or must have the ability to pass the QAC exam.)
  • Comfortable working and hiking in harsh environments as well as unpredictable and sometimes inclement weather.
  • Experience using ArcGIS, Trimble, and Garmin.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.
  • Valid driver’s license and must be able to provide your own transportation to the work site.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy material.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
