Primary Purpose of the Position: 

National Parks Conservation Association (NPCA), a 100-year old nonprofit advocacy organization, is seeking a seasoned communications professional to join our team and work to protect and enhance America’s national parks. Applicants should have at least four-five years of experience working in public relations, communications or as a reporter. Those with experience in environmental or policy-focused communications are strongly encouraged to apply.

The communications manager will help develop and lead integrated, strategic and creative communications initiatives, with an emphasis on media outreach, to advance NPCA’s work to fight oil and gas development threatening national parks and their surrounding lands. The position will also lead regional communications work for the Southwest and Northwest, working alongside programmatic staff as well as colleagues in Government Affairs, Conservation and across the communications team, along with external partners and stakeholders.

The position has flexibility to be based in NPCA’s Seattle, WA or Los Angeles, CA regional offices, working alongside other regional staff. The communications manager will report directly to NPCA’s Oakland-based Communications Director.

The manager should excel working independently with remote colleagues in fast-paced work environment. The position carries a strong emphasis on leading earned and placed media campaigns, among other strategic and creative tactics.

Additionally, the manager will work closely to develop and execute campaigns across NPCA’s social media channels in support of regional campaign work throughout the west. Applicants with proven social media success are strongly preferred.

 

 

Essential Functions: % of Time 

Lead communications for NPCA’s national and regional campaigns to defend national parks from inappropriate oil and gas development: 35%

Work with colleagues to develop and implement strategic regional communications plans that reflect supporting national campaigns and those for the Southwest, Northwest and other western regional initiatives: 30%

Work with Social Media Manager to develop campaigns and co-manage content for NPCA’s social media channels. 15% 

Build relationships with diverse regional and national journalists, influencers and storytellers to place and influence news and national parks advocacy stories. 15% 

Recruit, hire and manage communications interns and other administrative tasks: 10%

Minimum Work Schedule: 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday – Friday (37.5 hour work week)

 

  • Minimum Scope of Position:
    Phone and personal contact with other NPCA staff as well as reporters, partners and vendors. Work closely with relevant teams in planning and carrying out press events and activities and in managing media contacts and social media accounts. Some travel to attend regional events and staff retreats.
  • Minimum Qualifications, Competencies, Skills, Education, and Traits:
  • College degree, preferably in communications or journalism
  • At least (4) four to (5) five years of communications-related work experience
  • Fluency in Spanish a plus
  • Demonstrable integrated communications skill with traditional and social media, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram
  • Experience leading national advocacy campaigns
  • Strong writing and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Cision or related journalist database
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented team player who is able to perform a variety of tasks well, in a fast-paced work environment
  • An interest in the environment and national parks
  • Demonstrates an awareness and sensitivity to the needs and concerns of individuals from diverse cultures, backgrounds and orientations.
