This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) located in Roseburg or Central Point, Oregon

Make a significant contribution to wildlife diversity in Oregon! Implement the wildlife diversity program at the regional level and provide input on statewide species plans and management and provide recommendations on habitat protection and biological requirements of non-game wildlife.

What you will do:

Represent the Department in directing, coordinating and implementing the Oregon Conservation Strategy (OCS) in the Rogue and Umpqua Watershed Districts.

Recommend, assist, and implement restoration activities for OCS wildlife throughout the region and serve as the field expert on the biological requirements and management of wildlife species and provide scientific information and advice. Plan and collect biological information on strategy related wildlife populations and physical information on the quantity and quality of their habitats throughout the region that supports restoration, enhancement, or protective actions for OCS species.

Provide oversight of activities associated with interpretation and implementation of the Oregon Conservation Strategy. 

Provide guidance for survey methodologies and assist in development of survey protocols when needed. Identify monitoring priorities. Conduct surveys and record data on wildlife trends, age/sex composition, production and mortality rates, and other factors such as quality and quantity of habitat. Analyze and summarize data collected and report results to Rogue/Umpqua and Division staff as directed.

Coordinate Oregon Conservation Strategy implementation activities in the Rogue and Umpqua Watershed Districts. Directly or through partnerships: develop and review wildlife habitat restoration proposals, make recommendations on techniques and procedures for restoring habitats, and assist project proponents with enhancement activities.

Participate in Department statewide and regional conservation planning efforts involving OCS species and their habitats.

Represent the Rogue/Umpqua in the development and review of ODFW conservation activities to ensure consistency with the Oregon Conservation Strategy. Coordinate the involvement of Rogue/Umpqua biologists and managers in these internal planning efforts, and develop recommendations and comments as directed.

Coordinate the Rogue/Umpqua participation in OCS related grants, landowner incentive grants and other programs supporting wildlife habitat conservation.

Coordinate with and assist district staff in development and review of OCS related grant applications and permits.  Represent the Rogue/Umpqua Districts on Wildlife Division work groups to develop grant proposals for landowner incentive grant programs to assist with OCS implementation. Maintain working relations with public constituents and interest groups involved in the management and conservation of strategy species and other nongame wildlife and their habitats.

Working Conditions

• Work requires frequent travel by motor vehicle, aircraft, boat, and on foot through remote and rugged terrain, often in inclement weather, and occasionally at night. Frequent daily travel of 100-200 miles is required.

• Frequently requires walking in slippery conditions within and near flowing waterways, on steep slopes, and in forested or wetland environments.

• Frequently requires working alone in inclement weather conditions and/or isolated areas.

• Requires occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds in weight, including lumber, fence building materials, animal traps, field gear, backpacks, etc.

• Requires frequent personal computer use in an office setting and may require sitting for extended periods of time.

• Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours

• This position requires a Boater Education Card obtained through the Oregon State Marine Board. There are some exceptions to this (e.g., Coast Guard Boat Operator License or commercial fishing license). For further information, access the Web site at www.boatoregon.com. • This position requires an All-Terrain Vehicle (ATV) Safety Education Card for on the job use of quads and three-wheeled ATVs (Class 1 ATVs) obtained through the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, accessible at the following website: www.rideatvoregon.org/. • This position requires Hazardous Waste Operations Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training certification to respond to hazardous material spill events. If the selected applicant does not possess this certification, s/he must obtain it within six months of hire as a condition of continued employment.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

• Three years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program. At least one year of the experience must be at a technical or professional level performing activities in a fish or wildlife program such as researching and analyzing data, conducting investigations, applying pertinent laws and regulations, or coordinating and monitoring project activities; AND

• A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Bachelor’s degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework, or three additional years of biological experience performing studies, research, or resource management activities in a fish or wildlife program.

A Master’s degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Master’s degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to one year of the required experience. A Doctorate degree in Fisheries or Wildlife Science or a closely-related Doctorate degree in biological/ecological sciences will substitute for up to two years of the required experience.
