I thought I would let folks know that registration is currently open for my online course The Real Cost of Food, which starts on Monday, September 30. The course will run for 8 consecutive weeks, and each week includes video lectures, media assignments, discussion forums that I will participate in, and a Zoom Q & A session that I will host and that will be recorded for those who cannot participate. You cannot get college credit for this class since I am not offering it through a college or university, but it is an excellent opportunity to learn about food’s many social and environmental costs in a structured environment. It can help fill gaps in academic programs you might be in, and will likely be a great networking opportunity as well.

The course schedule:

Week 1: An Introduction to Food Systems

Week 2: Energy, Water, and Land in Food Production

Week 3: The Environmental Cost of Food

Week 4: Labor in the Food System

Week 5: Food as an Enterprise

Week 6: Food Insecurity and the Loss of Food Sovereignty

Week 7: The Cost of an Industrial Diet

Week 8: Synthesis, and Final Thoughts

I have taught this course at the University of Vermont for several years and have enjoyed very positive student evaluations. You can read through several testimonials from past students on my website. The cost for the 8-week course is $99, but folks can save $20 by entering the coupon code AESSRCOF when you check out to bring the cost down to just under $10 per week. I can also set up special pricing for folks in the non-profit sector, for farmers, farm workers, and possibly other groups, so please reach out if that would make the course more accessible.

Please forward to anyone you think might be interested, and feel free to reach out with any questions!

Take care,
