F&W Biologist 4
We are recruiting to fill one (1) full-time, permanent, F&W Biologist 4 position. The position is located within the Habitat Program at the Natural Resource Building in Olympia, WA.

This exciting position serves as a senior-level Biologist independently responsible for conducting biological evaluations on Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) lands (e.g. Wildlife Areas, Access Areas and Hatcheries), private lands, local jurisdictions, and Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) highways. This position regularly works with interdisciplinary teams of engineers, biologists, and geomorphologists to evaluate fish passage projects to ensure fish, wildlife and habitat resources are considered and protected.

The incumbent will be a key part of an enthusiastic staff and program, and contribute to watershed-level fish passage restoration. The incumbent will be a creative thinker, demonstrating leadership in providing technical assistance to work groups, managers, and stakeholders as statewide fish passage work enters into an era of collaboration with multiple parties. The incumbent may contribute to teaching, training, and mentoring junior staff, and will serve as a specialist in one or more subject areas. The incumbent may facilitate, coordinate, or manage projects and provide input into project design to maximize the salmon and habitat benefits. Additionally, the incumbent will be providing guidance for environmental permitting and review of engineering requirements related to fish passage activities.

DutiesThis position provides statewide fish passage technical assistance to agency staff, partners and others regarding the fish passage requirements of the various life stages of indigenous fish. As agency lead you will be evaluating techniques, offering management solutions, conducting project assessments, and scoping work of fish passage barriers in order to recommend project alternatives for fish passage barrier corrections that preserve, protect, perpetuate, or enhance resources. Work will also be conducted with regional biologists and project-related entities to issue Hydraulic Project Approval (HPA) permits.

You will represent the division and agency in assigned areas statewide, developing and maintaining working partnerships with WDFW programs, other agencies, local governments and interest groups.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in fisheries, wildlife management, natural resource science or environmental science AND five years of professional experience in fish management or fish research, wildlife management or wildlife research, or habitat management or habitat research.

OR four years as a Fish and Wildlife Biologist 3

AND a valid Driver’s License

Please note:

  • A Master’s degree in the applicable science will substitute for one year of the required experience.
  • A Ph.D. in the applicable science will substitute for two years of the required experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience, knowledge and training in the following:

  • Salmonid life history, habitat requirements, habitat enhancement/restoration techniques for salmonids.
  • Construction methods of habitat projects
  • Federal, state, and local project environmental permit requirements.
  • Aquatic habitat assessment methods and experience collecting biological data.
  • Familiarity with fish passage and screening assessment protocols.
  • Project Management
  • Microsoft programs and ArcGIS spatial data analysis methods.
  • Verbal and Written Communication – Ability to effectively convey ideas and information using spoken and written language that is appropriate to both the complexity of the topic, and the knowledge and understanding of the audience/reader.
  • Analysis – Creative thinking and problem solving skills; ability to use data and information in a clear and rational thought process to assess and understand issues, evaluate options, form accurate conclusions, and make decisions.
  • Managing Projects and Work Assignments – Effectively organize multiple assignments, sometimes of a complex nature or involving competing priorities, to produce work products that are accurate, thorough and on time.
  • Teamwork – Successfully works with co-workers and within interdisciplinary teams by creating a cooperative and productive environment in which to resolve problems or collaborate on projects. Demonstrates interpersonal communication and conflict resolution skills.
  • Work Ethic – Efficiently works with minimal supervision and is self-motivated; willing to train and mentor others if needed. Seek and act on opportunities to improve and streamline work processes.

Supplemental InformationField work can vary from 10 % to 50 % depending upon the season and requires working outdoors during inclement weather, walking over rough terrain (typically less than a mile, but occasionally over long distances of several miles) while carrying a light load. This position typically works 8 hour days, Monday through Friday, but may require overnight travel or significant drive time to attend meetings and conduct site visits. Field work may involve wading in moving water while using measuring equipment, or operating a backpack electro fisher. Use of large pickup trucks or 4-wheel drive vehicles may be used for gravel roads or when necessary. Additionally, this position is expected to interact with the public in a professional manner during field visits, local stakeholder meetings and individually. City, County, State, and Tribal nature resource personnel are typical customers for technical assistance.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
