Duties
We have two full-time Communications Consultant 3 positions: a Shoptalk Editor and a Reducing Toxic Threats lead.
Both positions will:
- Write, edit, plan, and prepare publications, reports, brochures, web content, presentations, social media posts, and other communications products.
- Rewrite complex, technical information so it is understood by and accessible to diverse audiences.
- Identify industries, government agencies, nonprofits, and other audiences that are impacted by HWTR’s projects and regulations. Work with program staff to determine how to effectively reach these audiences, and recommend strategies for ensuring these messages are communicated clearly.
- Develop communication plans. Plan, recommend, and track communication tasks for projects to ensure successful communication of changes or new information. Coordinate and manage communications projects, including timelines, team roles, and measurable outcomes.
- Work with program staff to know what messages and changes need to be communicated. Recommend communications channels, draft message content, and coordinate reviews among staff or partners.
Duties specific to each position
The Shoptalk Editor will:
- Coordinate the production and promotion of Shoptalk, HWTR’s external newsletter. The newsletter features content that helps businesses and other facilities comply with hazardous waste regulations, understand fees and reports, learn about pollution prevention, get announcements, and other content that supports HWTR programs and priorities. Work with program staff to develop articles. Write and edit articles, manage deadlines, and publish issues to the Ecology website three times per year.
- Be our business audience lead by planning and developing communication products to reach our business audiences. Most of the work focuses on hazardous waste (also known as dangerous waste in Washington) at businesses and other facilities.
The Reducing Toxic Threats lead will:
- This position provides communication support for projects in the Reducing Toxic Threats Unit. Plan, develop, write, edit, and review publications, web content, presentations, social media posts, and other communication products. Project areas may include:
- Safer Products for Washington.
- The Children’s Safe Products Act.
- Green Chemistry.
- Chemical Action Plans.
- Alternative Assessments.
- Results of product testing studies.
- Provide communication support for the implementation of a new law. Safer Products for Washington (also known as the Pollution Prevention for Healthy People and Puget Sound Act) creates a new way to keep harmful chemicals out of the environment.
- Support transparency of law implementation through clear communication and active stakeholder involvement. Recommend methods to engage stakeholders through events, Listserv messages, and other channels.

- Provide communication support to HWTR’s initiatives, including product testing, chemical action plans, and the Children’s Safe Products Act.

Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, journalism, humanities, public relations, or related field AND three years of writing/editing experience; OR equivalent education/experience.
AND
Experience creating written and visual content for publications, web, blogs, social media, or other outreach materials.
Desired Qualifications:
- Experience editing scientific or other technical content into plain language.
- Experience managing team projects from beginning to end.
- Experience planning and implementing a communications strategy.
- Experience training or coaching others to write plainly and clearly for a variety of audiences.
