ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES
The Department of Environmental Studies at Wofford College seeks an environmental humanist
to join our multidisciplinary team of faculty as a tenure-track assistant professor, starting in the
fall semester of 2020.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Qualified candidates will have a terminal degree (e.g. Ph.D. or MFA) in an area of environmental
studies or closely related field. Applicants with expertise in environmental writing, literature
and/or film, who are intellectually engaged in national and/or international environmental
issues and conversations, are highly preferred.

EXPECTATIONS:
Wofford faculty are expected to be creative teacher-scholars with a high aptitude for and
interest in undergraduate teaching, a commitment to the liberal arts, and a desire to involve
undergraduates in scholarship. The teaching load includes three courses each semester and a
four-week January focused-study Interim term. To earn tenure, faculty are expected to
demonstrate excellence in teaching, continued scholarly development, and service to the
college.

The successful candidate will teach an environmental humanities core course taken by all
environmental studies majors and minors; applicants are encouraged to discuss how they might
incorporate a range of humanities perspectives (e.g. literature, creative arts, philosophy,
religion) into this course. They also will teach upper level courses within their specialty area and
a topical seminar that fulfills a requirement for students in their first semester at Wofford. All
department faculty periodically teach our four-credit interdisciplinary introductory seminar,
capstone courses, and senior seminar, and we mentor senior capstone projects that reflect the
diverse interests of environmental studies students.

The new faculty member actively will engage in the department’s valued tradition of field
studies and experiential education and will interact with students at our Goodall Environmental
Studies Center. Demonstrated experience and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary teaching and
research will be valued in the search process. The ideal candidate also will embrace the
collaborative spirit that characterizes the college.
