An Archaeologist (Research Associate I Special) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) to provide support for the Cultural Resource Management Program. This position is located at U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Portland District’s Fern Ridge Office near Eugene, Oregon. Duties include, but are not limited to small scale archeological survey, evaluation, and monitoring, research and reporting of fieldwork, maintenance of paper and electronic records including GIS data and supervision and management of field technicians or volunteers for the survey and evaluation activities. The position will require frequent travel (day trips and overnight) within the Willamette Valley to conduct fieldwork.

Required Qualifications:

1) Bachelor’s degree in archaeology/anthropology or a closely related field.
2) Demonstrated experience conducting archaeological survey, documenting archaeological sites, and previous authorship of cultural resources inventory reports.
3) Experience conducting archaeological survey, testing, excavation, site recording, photography, site mapping, monitoring and condition assessment, managing of field technicians, logistics, and preparation of reports that include recommendations for National Register Eligibility.
4) Effectively communicate verbally and in writing.
5) Proficiency in the use of GPS equipment and software. Well versed with GPS data collection (data conversion, projections, ground truth methods). Experience with GPS/GIS (Global Positioning Systems/Geographic Information Systems), specifically the collection, manipulation, and management of GPS/GIS data.
6) Familiarity with ArcGIS 10 or higher, pathfinder, and other GIS/GPS software
7) Must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide sponsorship for this position.
8) Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date.
9) Ability to lift up to 20lbs, walk across rugged terrain, bend, lift, work outdoors and in inclement weather.

Preferred Qualifications:

1) Master’s degree in archaeology/anthropology or a closely related field.
2) Demonstrated knowledge of cultural resources in the Pacific Northwest, specifically the Willamette River Basin.
3) Experience with public outreach and/or education pertaining to cultural resources.
4) Experience working with remote sensing data (LIDAR and Aerial Imagery).
5) Strong knowledge of data creation and database management.
6) Demonstrated experience as a crew chief or work lead in archaeological field work.
7) Experience having supervised and/or trained other professionals in the techniques of archaeological survey, testing, and evaluation.
8) Experience working with Oregon State Historic Preservation policies and procedures for built environment and archaeological compliance.
