Engineering Aide 3 In-Training
We are recruiting to fill one (1) permanent Engineering Aide 3 In-Training position within the Habitat Program, Fish Passage Division. This position is located at the Natural Resources Building in Olympia, WA.

We are seeking an individual with a passion for conserving, protecting and restoring fish and wildlife resources in Washington. The Habitat Engineering team is a highly specialized group of professional engineers and engineering aides with expertise in fish passage, fish screening, riparian bank protection and restoration of freshwater and marine habitats. Engineering Aides in the section work in the field gathering various types of site data, performing surveying tasks, and inspecting construction projects in and around the water. A large component of the position also involves office work to incorporate field information and input from engineers into AutoCAD Civil 3D software to prepare detailed engineering plans. Engineers and engineering aides in the section work closely with diverse interdisciplinary teams including agency biologists, tribal representatives, landowners, project proponents and interest groups.

If the selected candidate does not have the skills and abilities to immediately perform all the duties of an Engineering Aide 3, the supervisor will work with the selected candidate to develop an individualized training plan to develop those talents within a fixed period of time. While the training plan is in effect, the selected candidate will be classified as an Engineering Aide 2 with the working title of Engineering Aide 3 In -Training.  Upon successful completion of the training plan, the selected candidate will be reclassified to an Engineering Aide 3.

A fully qualified candidate may be offered a starting position as an Engineering Aide 3 without an training plan.

Engineering Aide 2 Salary Range: $3,682 – $4,829
Engineering Aide 3 Salary Range: $3,964 – $5,205

DutiesThe Habitat Program is dedicated to protecting, conserving and restoring ecosystems and habitats necessary for the long-term sustainability of fish and wildlife populations in Washington State. To serve this need, staff uses permitting authority and provides sound scientific information, management recommendations and expert technical guidance to other agencies and the public.

Engineering Section staff contribute to conservation, protection and restoration of healthy aquatic and riparian ecosystems by providing technical assistance, training, guideline development, complex environmental engineering designs, topographic surveying, computer aided drafting and design (CADD) development, and construction inspection for fish screening, fish passage, bank protection, and habitat restoration projects. Engineering Aides work closely with section engineers and provide an essential supporting role for these tasks.

Projects/tasks commonly involve collaboration with tribes, local governments, watershed groups, conservation districts, Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups, volunteer groups, private citizens, and other state and federal agencies, and WDFW programs.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

To be considered for the EA2 classification:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Two years experience or college level coursework with a major emphasis in computer aided drafting
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D design software and current drafting methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of and ability to appropriately use arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Understanding of engineering basics, principles of surveying and construction practices
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

To be considered for the EA3 classification:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Four years experience or college level coursework with a major emphasis in computer aided drafting
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD Civil 3D design software and current drafting methods and techniques
  • Knowledge of and ability to appropriately use arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and trigonometry
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft software (e.g. Excel, Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Understanding of engineering basics, principles of surveying and construction practices
  • Relevant experience conducting relevant field work, such as surveying, performing construction inspections, or gathering data
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Four years of experience involving engineering techniques, two years of which must have been at a level comparable to Engineering Aide 2.
  • Two years of experience using AutoCAD Civil 3D
  • Additional relevant education and experience pertaining to habitat restoration, fish passage, fish screening, civil engineering design, drafting, surveying, construction inspection, project management, and permitting are desirable.
