Natural Resource Technician 2
We are recruiting to fill one (1) Natural Resource Technician 2 within the Wildlife Program. This position is located in Clarkston, WA. This position is anticipated to last 3.5 months.We are seeking an individual with excellent professional service and a willingness to work in a team environment in outdoor remote locations with the public and other government entities.

DutiesThis position will assist the Wildlife Conflict Specialist in Asotin and Garfield counties to implement wildlife program goals and objectives in supporting the agency’s mission by reducing crop damage to private agricultural lands caused by elk, deer, and turkeys.

This position supports the Agency’s mission by assisting the Wildlife Conflict Specialist in responding to, addressing and resolving wildlife conflicts reported by private landowners.  Specifically, this position will primarily focus on elk-related agricultural conflicts in Asotin and Garfield Counties with a focus on non-lethal approaches to mitigate elk damage and temporary fencing while assisting the Wildlife Conflict Specialist in the administration of permits which result in the lethal removal of elk.

One of the essential functions of this position is to be able to possess and use an agency-issued firearm during the course of performing the job duties.  The incumbent of this position must successfully pass initial and recurrent required background checks, pass a pre-employment drug test, complete initial firearm safety training, initial firearm qualification and recurrent requalification requirements, and maintain eligibility to possess and use agency-issued firearm(s) at all times while in this position.
QualificationsRequired Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as a Natural Resource Technician 2 or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to legally possess firearms, pass a background check and qualify with department-issued firearms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Nationally Accredited Basic First Aid Certification

Principles, practices and methods of environmental or resource management, methods and techniques of field sampling, testing, data gathering, basic research and field investigations; applicable state, federal and local environmental and wildlife regulations and policies; technical report writing methods; characteristics and health of pollutants to wildlife.
Additionally:

  • Wildlife population relationship and ecology
  • General agriculture and range management principles including local crop rotation and fencing practices
  • Principles of wildlife harvest management
  • Wildlife management tools and field techniques
  • Personal computer hardware and software (MS Office products and Adobe)
  • Principles of wildlife damage management
  • Familiarity with WDFW hunting regulations
  • Safe and efficient use of firearms, hazing devices and pyrotechnics
  • Application of approved agency euthanizing methods

Supplemental InformationWorking Conditions:
Work will be performed in an office and outdoor setting. Field work can vary upon season and requires working outdoors during inclement weather and walking over rough terrain. Work schedules can vary depending on elk behavior and can often include long and irregular hours. Tools you may be required to use include: fencing, mobile communication devices, field glasses, pyrotechnics, firearms, paintball guns, other hazing devices, global positioning systems, motion activated cameras, 4×4 trucks, trailers, ATV’s, snowmobiles and other hand tools.

Union:
This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.
