Scientific Technician 3

We are recruiting to fill one (1) 7.5-month permanent full-time Career Seasonal Scientific Technician 3 position in the Fish Program, Puget Sound Sampling Unit. The season for this position is February 22nd through October 7th.  The duty station is located at Mason’s Resort, 444 Front St,Sekiu, WA 98381.

This position functions as a lead fishery sampler, performing advanced technical scientific duties, independently executing established and new sampling procedures, and training and directing technicians in sampling Puget Sound fisheries on the Olympic Peninsula.  This position collects and summarizes recreational salmon and marine fish fisheries data to meet sampling goals set by biometricians.  Proper implementation of this region’s fisheries sampling program provides the information necessary to estimate catch and effort statistics for recreational fisheries management, assessment of biological information by stock, and subsequent achievement of spawning escapements and court-mandated catch allocations.  The responsibilities of this position are advanced technical scientific duties and are performed under very limited supervision.  This position aids in the hiring (interviews, reference checks, etc.) and training of employees, may conduct boat surveys, edits data, and samples recreational fisheries. The location of the sampling work is at various docks and boat ramps at Sekiu, WA resorts during Pacific Halibut, marine fish, and mark-selective salmon fisheries in Marine Areas 4 and 5.

Working Conditions:

  • 24/7 non-scheduled, typically 8 to 10 hours per day between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m.  40 hours per week, weekend and evening work is required.
  • Work is conducted in the Puget Sound/Strait of Juan de Fuca area with seldom overnight travel.
  • Includes occasional contact with individuals who are angry, distraught, or frustrated

The work is primarily conducted in the field.  Includes adverse weather and sea conditions, noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of sitting, squatting, walking, and boating for conducting angler interviews, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, kneeling, heavy lifting (up to 40 lbs. unassisted), working and standing in confined space, fish blood and slime, slippery surfaces, rain gear, equipment holsters, personal flotation device (PFD), agency identifying clothing, biting and stinging insects, use of knives, and transporting agency staff and equipment in agency vehicles.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science,
AND
Four years of experience as a Scientific Technician.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science
AND  
Four years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural or environmental science classes.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

  • At least 6 months experience conducting creel surveys and /or sampling fisheries in Puget Sound or a similar area.
  • Able to identify all salmon species and common Puget Sound marine fish and shellfish species.
  • Familiar with salmon life history and sport fishing regulations.
  • Knowledge of sport fishing methods and gear.
  • Experience with Microsoft (MS) Word, MS Excel, and MS Windows.
