The Department of Horticulture invites applications for a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term Faculty Research Assistant position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Department Head.

The position is a native bee taxonomist. The position determines native bees for the Oregon Bee Atlas, the Oregon State Arthropod Collection, other OSU research programs and for external clients. The position is also responsible for developing educational materials, such as new taxonomic keys. Other responsibilities include editing extension and research publications as needed, and supervising undergraduate and summer employees.

Position Duties

70% Taxonomy and curation

  • Determination of native bee specimens from the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Curation of native bees incoming from Oregon Bee Atlas and of existing collections in the Oregon State Arthropod Collection.

10% Extension and outreach

  • Lead and develop material for the Oregon Bee School, teaching the basics of native bee taxonomy.
  • Lead and develop material for the Oregon Bee Field School, teaching basics of native bee survey in the field.

10% Scholarship

  • Develop new taxonomic keys for the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Co-author annual report on the results of the Oregon Bee Atlas Survey.

5% Field Survey

  • Survey native bees within the Pacific Northwest region.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to transport equipment and personnel to survey sites.

5% Lead work

  • Create and oversee schedules of student workers assisting the Oregon Bee Atlas.

Minimum/Required Qualifications

  • BSc degree in Biology, Ecology or related field, with a minimum 5 years of experience working on native bee taxonomy.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Ability to contribute to the ongoing review of project performance and establishment of short-term objectives. Able to coordinate and organize simultaneous activities. Self-motivated.
  • Able to communicate effectively in English in writing and orally with individuals whose first language is other than English.
  • Possess sufficient discretion to manage confidential information appropriately, as when hiring or terminating student workers.
  • Experience with data management and statistical software (spreadsheets, word processing, and email), and ability to learn new procedures, technics, or software programs quickly.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a commitment to team-oriented management. Ability to clearly communicate job expectations and provide training when needed.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors in all weather conditions.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

This position requires driving a university vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.

Preferred (Special) Qualifications

  • Experience with molecular techniques to identify cryptic native bees.
  • 5 years experience teaching native bee ecology, biology and taxonomy to novices.
  • Experience working with volunteer citizen scientists.
  • Ability to make good decisions under conditions of unexpected changes.
  • Working Conditions / Work Schedule

  • Work around stinging insects.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work outdoors for extended periods of time in all weather conditions.
  • May need to work after regular working hours and occasionally on weekends.
