The Director of the USDA Northwest Climate Hub and Western Wildlands Threat Assessment Center (WWETAC) position with the Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station has been posted on USAjobs https://www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/555887400 and closes on 1/13.
As background – This position serves as a Program Director for the Northwest Climate Hub (NWCH) and the Western Wildlands Environmental Threats Assessment Center (WWETAC). WWETAC was chartered in 2005 to address urgent environmental threats across western landscapes. WWETAC provides landscape scale, interdisciplinary, applied research and tools to address challenges such as wildfire, insect outbreaks, and pathogens. Widely-adopted tools and modeling systems, such as ArcFuels, Landscape Treatment Designer, ForWarn, and MC2, were developed at WWETAC. The NWCH serves Alaska, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington by delivering science-based, region-specific technologies and practical information for climate-informed decision making. Engaging with partners is a key part of the Hub’s mission to create actionable science and community-focused solutions. In leading both of these centers, each of which operates at the critical interface between science and management, the incumbent will have an unusually broad range of responsibilities. These include providing science leadership in directing a multidisciplinary research agenda, coordinating with other research programs as well as a wide range of partner groups and organizations, and leading science delivery efforts that ensure the research and tools reach the practitioners who need it. Few positions promise this much opportunity to make a tangible difference in responding to climate change and other complex management issues in the western U.S.
