Cultural Resources Intern
Note: Flexible schedule can be accommodated for current students or while enrolled in class.
The person filling this position will assist the CAMP archaeologist and historian in projects and provide technical assistance to the Capital and Asset Management Program in the field of cultural resources management, particularly for built-environment historic properties.
This position helps to facilitate the implementation of budgets ($131 million in FY19-21) allocated by the legislature. Under the direction of the CAMP archaeologist and historian, they will perform a variety of review and research activities to support and ensure agency compliance with state and federal law, regulations, and policies related to historic preservation and cultural resources management. Typical resource types include historic fish hatchery complexes, rail grades, dams, levees, homesteads, farmsteads, and landscapes. This position may work with sensitive and/or confidential records and data not subject to Agency Public Disclosure Records.
The position will assist in cultural resource surveys and data collection, data entry, and equipment preparation and maintenance. The position will also assist the CAMP archaeologist
and historian in research, writing, and reviewing historic property inventory forms and cultural resource reports.
- Assist CAMP archaeologist and historian in documenting cultural resources.
- Assist CAMP archaeologist and historian is acquiring necessary cultural clearances to perform project(s).
- Assist in developing and administering WDFW’s hatchery inventory project.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Working Conditions
Work Setting, including hazards:
- Substantial time at various field locations throughout Washington under adverse environmental conditions.
- The ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds on uneven terrain. Work on active construction sites including around large equipment.
- Work on active hatchery sites and with hatchery staff.
Schedule (i.e., hours and days):
- As needed, variable hours ranging from 0 to 40 hours per week and alternative work schedules including overnight stays are likely.
- Note: Flexible schedule can be accommodated for current students or while enrolled in class.
Travel Requirements:
- This position requires substantial field time and travel throughout Washington. Long field days and some overnight stays are likely.
Tools and Equipment:
- Ability to operate pickup trucks. Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.).
- Other equipment used will include a GPS unit, camera, and hand tools for digging. Ability to record accurate and legible field notes by hand or digital devices.
- Ability to operate a digital camera including download to computer.
Customer Interactions:
- Interact with public while accessing work areas. Must be professional, well-spoken, and non-confrontational.
Required Qualifications:
- HS diploma or GED and is currently a college student (enrolled and pursuing a degree at an institution of higher education) majoring in History, Historic Architecture, Historic Preservation, Cultural Resource Management, Archaeology, Anthropology, or social science related degree.
- Possession of a Driver’s License valid in Washington State and acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work in water and carry 40 pounds over uneven terrain.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
- Highly motivated.
- Working knowledge of MS Office package including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Pursuing a degree in cultural resource management, historic preservation, history, archaeology or similar discipline.
