Two Positions
Full-Time/Non-Permanent
Western Pond Turtle Technician (ST2)

We are seeking an enthusiastic, quick learner who is willing to work independently and as a member of a team to further the conservation of a state endangered species in a beautiful field setting. The incumbent will share our values of trust, respect, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and will want to work hard and have fun in a team environment where there’s never a dull moment.

In this three month (mid-April to July) position you will be assisting with Western Pond Turtle (WPT) population and disease monitoring by performing the following key duties:

  • Set traps and participate in capture, marking and release of WPT
  • Attach radio transmitters to female WPT and use telemetry to find and monitor nests
  • Data entry and maintenance of electronic records
  • Participate in disease monitoring in collaboration with State and zoo veterinarians
  • Preparation and maintenance of extensive field equipment related to WPT work
  • Coordinates field survey efforts with biologists and volunteers

QualificationsRequired Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including one year of high school science, and
  • Two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1

OR

  • Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science, and
  • Two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Knowledge of:

  1. Wildlife population relationships and ecology.
  2. Wildlife survey methods.
  3. Scientific principles and techniques.
  4. Personal computer hardware and software (Microsoft Office). Use of tablets (iPad).
  5. Species identification of reptiles.
  6. Wildlife management tools and field techniques including experience working with non-hunted (non-game) species.

Ability to:

  1. Speak and write effectively – conveys clear, timely, persuasive messages that positively influence the thoughts and actions of others.
  2. Follow prescribed protocols and procedures.
  3. Conduct field surveys to collect data.
  4. Accurately and legibly record and organize data and other information and ability to input data into appropriate databases (e.g., Excel, Access, Survey 123 etc.).
  5. Visually discriminate when identifying and distinguishing biological and physical features.
  6. Recognize differentiating animal characteristics to identify species.
  7. Become skilled in the identification of turtles and disease in turtles.
  8. Become skilled in the use of radio-telemetry.
  9. Complete required administrative paperwork in an accurate and timely manner.
  10. Effectively and safely operate small non-motorized boats, 4-wheel drive vehicles and standard highway vehicles.
  11. Effectively and safely operate additional equipment and tools including: radios and other mobile communication devices, radio-telemetry equipment, laptop computers, tablets, spotting scopes/binoculars, digital cameras, and GPS units.
  12. Communicate with the public (including both positive and negative interactions).
  13. Utilize standard scientific measuring techniques.
  14. Ability to lift gear over 50lbs.
  15. Follow directions in written and oral format.
  16. Hike in remote areas and on rough terrain in all kinds of weather conditions.

Preferred/Desired Qualifications:

Work or academic experience with radio-telemetry.
