POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is currently recruiting for a part-time K-12 Stormwater Education and Outreach Program Manager. This is a part-time position budgeted at 20 hours per week.

This position is responsible for overseeing and delivering programs and partnerships that educate school age audiences about stormwater issues and protecting Seattle’s waterways. The work involves managing several agreements with partners that provide applied education experiences as well as directly implementing programs including the City’s participation in Salmon in the Schools. The position reports to the Strategic Outreach and Communications Manager and the Source Control and Pollution Prevention Division Director.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Develop and manage program goals, content, schedule, budget, assessment metrics and communications for K-12 Stormwater Education and Outreach. Develop and manage contracts and intra departmental agreements as needed to support the program.
  • Lead Seattle’s participation in Salmon in the Schools Seattle (SISS) program. Coordinate with SISS community partners.  Manage budget and work plan. Manage contract for equipment and salmon rearing support.  Develop, support and implement educational experiences for approximately 70 schools.
  • Create and manage partnerships, including contractual agreements, to develop and implement field trip experiences and materials for K-12 audiences that link to mainstream curriculum and support youth learning about stormwater including educational resources and experiences for youth to learn about the Duwamish River.
  • Create plans, reports, technical research, evaluation and analysis of program outcomes.
  • Provide technical expertise or assistance to the SPU Drainage and Wastewater line of business, SPU, other City departments, or outside agencies and community organizations.
  • Establish goals, budgets, schedules and performance measures for assigned projects.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to inclusive public engagement,  equity and the City Race and Social Justice Initiative.

Work Schedule Requirements: May be required to work occasional evenings or weekends or adjust work days/hours during peak program seasons.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Experience:  Three (3) years of experience in planning and research related to environmental education, teaching, conservation; or other work directly related to City planning and development activities

Education:  A baccalaureate degree in planning, education, environmental studies, public administration or related field OR two (2) additional years of relevant experience.

Licensing:  Valid Washington State driver’s license.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Experience w/ education and outreach, and behavior change programs, particularly related to municipal wastewater and drainage systems
  • Experience writing curriculum/lesson plans and teaching youth
  • Experience in program management/ coordination
  • Experience designing and implementing informal environmental education programs
  • Detail oriented, highly organized, adaptable and able to to work with multiple time-sensitive tasks and schedules
  • Experience providing customer service and support to staff and community
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively
  • Ability to develop detailed plans and programs from general direction
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse workforce and customer base
  • Knowledge, experience and commitment to the principles and implementation of equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Knowledge and experience using Office or equivalent software.
