Duty station is negotiable. Duty stations in King County receive an additional 5% added to their monthly base salary. The salary listed on this announcement does not reflect the additional 5%.
Want to be a critical part of a highly motivated team in providing the State of Washington wildland fire protection of our natural resources and our lands special to all who visit? Washington State Department of Natural Resources is home to Washington’s largest on-call fire department and protects 13 million acres of state and privately owned lands.
You will join the South Puget Sound Region as the Wildland Fire Training Coordinator. This position is responsible for: managing training records; developing successional plans; participating on Red Card Peer Review Committee; and helping with fire district grants. You will accomplish these tasks working with Region and Division DNR staff, Washington Fire Service, and other state and federal agencies. The right candidate has:
- Combination two or more successful years of progressively more responsible professional work in wildland fire suppression, wildland fire training or a closely related field.
- Two years’ experience of working within the Incident Command System.
- Two years’ experience with PMS 310-1, Incident Qualification System or Field Manager Course Guide.
- Familiar with various wildland fire suppression operations and functions.
- At least two years’ successful experience working as a member of a geographically-dispersed professional organization.
- Strong communication skills using a variety of media, including public speaking skills to effectively address large groups in an organized and logical manner.
- Strong critical thinking skills.
- Ability to be effective and make sound decisions within a fast-paced work environment.
- Forms and maintains effective relationships with others that are based on trust and respect.
- Possesses the ability and knowledge to develop and instruct classes pertaining to wildland fire suppression activities, including knowledge of wildland fire behavior and fireline safety awareness.
- Demonstrated understanding of budget development and tracking.
- Possess strong computer-supported skills, including use of Word, Excel and PowerPoint software.
- Ability to work on uneven terrain in all weather conditions. Work is performed in an office setting (~70% of the time) and outdoor environment. With responsibility for working with dispersed, field-based staff, the incumbent is expected to spend up to ~30% of his/her time outside.
- The incumbent in this position is required to travel. Travel is frequent to all geographical parts of the Region to carry out training and program coordination responsibilities. Periodic travel is required to the DNR headquarters in Olympia, and overnight travel is required several times per year to other meetings across the state.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function. Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
- Bachelor’s degree with major study in wildfire science, environmental science or a closely-related field and at least two years of professional work experience in one of these fields.
- Current incident command system qualification at the NWCG Single Resource Boss, Unit Leader or higher.
- Familiarity with current wildland firefighting approaches and challenges in the western United States.
- Experience working in the Incident Qualification System (IQS) developing employee training plans. This includes tracking individuals’ wildland fire training and experience.
- Experience developing and tracking a program budget.
- Experience in wildland fire regulation and prevention programs, including knowledge and experience with DNR’s fire regulations (Chapter 76.04 RCW and Chapter 332 WAC).

The duty station for this position may be negotiated at the time of hire within the region boundaries. Potential locations for your office may be Enumclaw, Belfair, or Tumwater.
