Job Type AmeriCorps
Salary Details $1945/month plus education award at completion of service term

Sound Salmon Solutions (SSS) is one of fourteen Regional Fisheries Enhancement Groups (RFEGs) created in 1990 by the Washington State Legislature to work at the community level to engage community volunteers and landowners in the state’s salmon enhancement efforts. SSS is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to connect you to our watersheds for the future of salmon. Habitat, including water quality, is the major limiting factor to healthy, sustainable salmon populations.

SSS’ Education Program serves to restore and enhance aquatic habitat and water quality within our community through fostering environmental stewardship. The Program’s goals are to enhance public understanding and awareness of the importance of healthy watersheds and salmon conservation by drawing links between human actions now and their immediate and future ecological impacts. Environmental stewardship is fostered through engaging youth in project-based experiential science classes and engaging youth and community volunteers in on-the-ground habitat restoration. This position is contingent on funding through the Washington Service Corps Program.

In this service position, you will:

  • Coordinate and facilitate virtual, classroom, and field lessons about salmon, their habitats, and human impacts to salmon populations
  • Coordinate volunteer events, including program development, volunteer recruitment and training, and annual volunteer appreciation events
  • Represent SSS at community events
  • Assist in data management and analysis for education and volunteer restoration projects, specifically managing the volunteer database, education database, and pre and post-survey evaluation data for science classes and volunteer events
  • Engage in partnerships between multiple agencies, and involvement in the salmon recovery planning process, including tribal, community and government entities

Benefits include:

  • A monthly stipend of $1,945 (before deductions and withholdings)
  • $6,095 education award that can be used for future schooling or to pay off existing qualified student loan debt upon successful completion of the service term
  • Basic health insurance
  • Assistance with childcare costs
  • Student loan forbearance during the service term
HOW TO APPLYApplications must be received through our position listing on the Washington Service Corps/Americorps website.  Interviews will begin in June for the 2020-2021 service term.
