The National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center (SESYNC) invites applications to an online 5-day short course: Introduction to Social and Ecological Network Analysis. The course will be held online Monday, July 13–Friday, July 17.

We kindly ask that you explore the announcement on SESYNC’s website at: https://www.sesync.org/opportunities/short-courses/introduction-to-social-and-ecological-network-analysis-short-course-2020 and share this opportunity with interested colleagues. Deadline: June 2, 2020.

This foundational course introduces the theory and practice of social and ecological network analysis, combining approaches from both the social and natural sciences to inform new strategies for studying socio-environmental systems. While standard statistical analyses assume that data on entities (e.g., people, organizations, animals) are independent, network analysis focuses on the relationships among entities to explain emergent properties of complex systems.

The course covers a variety of established and novel techniques used to analyze social and ecological networks, particularly statistical inference methods, and includes hands-on coding demonstrations in the R programming language. Participants will engage in group discussion to help develop network-based hypotheses for socio-environmental systems and will receive guidance on testing them effectively. Anyone interested in adding network analysis to their methodological toolkit, regardless of prior experience, is encouraged to apply.

Participants are expected to be available each day of the course for live virtual classes and meetings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (U.S. Eastern Time). The registration fee for the course is $50.
