Assistant Program Director, Outdoor Environmental Education

Job Summary

Join our Outdoor Environmental Education team for the Fall 2020 season at YMCA Camp Colman! The assistant director role assists in the coordination and implementation of outdoor environmental education experiences for students in elementary and middle school that encourage science-based curiosity and exploration. Responsibilities

Plans and delivers creative quality programming for school groups, including evening activities. Designs program schedules to meet each group’s needs.

Assists in recruiting user groups to ensure camp is reaching maximum capacity.

Hosts assigned groups onsite as assigned.

Secures user group attendance and statistical information before group departs camp.

Conducts group satisfaction surveys to ensure that programs meet groups’ needs and are of the highest quality.

Maintains high standards of housekeeping including bathrooms, cabins and main lodge.

Assists in keeping all program equipment in working condition and available.

Assists in maintaining all program areas in a safe and orderly condition.

Ensures communication with support staff when hosting groups, including kitchen and maintenance staff

Helps to supervise assigned seasonal staff by observing, coaching, providing feedback and assisting with problem solving.

Creates accurate staff schedules on a weekly basis.

Evaluates staff as assigned.

Serves as program instructor as needed.

Provides excellent customer service.

Attends and assists in planning staff meetings.

Maintains relevant American Camping Association standards.

Follows YMCA policies and procedures, including those related to medical and disciplinary situations, child abuse prevention and emergencies.

Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications

21 years of age or older.

Experience in supervision is preferred.

Ability to work as a team with program instructors and director.

Experience with leadership or supervision preferred.

Experience working in programs that promote diversity and leadership helpful.

Experience working with youth in an environmental education or residential camp environment.

Ability to facilitate outdoor adventure activities such as group initiatives, climbing wall, and camping.

Ability to participate in activities that involve rigorous activity in an outdoor setting, including, but not limited to hiking, boating, camping, and swimming.

Current certifications in CPR and First Aid and current documentation available upon hiring/arrival.

Prefer knowledge of, and previous experience with, diverse populations (language, culture, race, physical activity, sexual orientation, etc.). Ability to speak any language in addition to English may be helpful.
