Salary
$42.92 to $55.80 per hour
Salary includes a Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) of 4.40% which is subject to annual review and adjustment.
Responsibilities
- The incumbent serves Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve as an advisor in the management of natural resources and is responsible for program development and implementation in the area of marine ecology. This position resides within the Resources Management Division and provides supervision and oversight for the park’s marine ecology program.
- The person in this position works as a team member of a multi-disciplinary resources team, including collaboration with the park’s terrestrial ecology program, inventory and monitoring program, and cultural resources program.
- The incumbent develops and implements long range plans for the inventory, evaluation, documentation, preservation, research, and interpretation of the park’s natural resources.
- They identify research needs, prepare statements of work, and provide oversight for research projects carried out by a team of science staff and collaborators.
- They collect, analyze, and synthesize scientific information from research and monitoring projects, with focus on applied research questions to inform resource management decisions.
- The person in the position communicates technical knowledge and findings to the scientific community, National Park Service staff, park visitors, stakeholders, and general public in various formats.
- The incumbent carries out administrative duties, including supervision, budget management, and contract and agreement oversight.

This is a full-time permanent career/career conditional – seasonal position subject to release and recall procedures. It includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, you will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks up to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. You are guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year. The main work season is March through November, but these dates can vary due to project requirements or weather conditions. Anticipated non-pay, non-work time is approximately 2 to 4 weeks during the months of December through February. You may be recalled for training or other work-related requirements during your scheduled non-pay time.

Qualifications
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year). The resume must reflect either: “full-time” or “total number of hours worked per week (i.e., work 40+ hours a week).” If part-time, the number of hours worked per week must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.
To qualify for this GS-0408-12 position you must meet the following basic education requirement by close of the announcement:
You must have a bachelor’s degree, or higher degree, from an accredited college or university or in biology, or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours in ecology, and 12 semester hours in physical and mathematical sciences. (You must include a copy of your transcripts).
In addition to the basic education requirement listed above, to qualify for this position at the GS-12 grade level, you must possess the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement:
EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors). Examples of qualifying specialized experience include duties involved in conducting research to understand factors affecting marine ecosystems and publishing manuscripts and reports to communicate study findings; designing and implementing marine scientific monitoring programs through data collection, analysis, and reporting; working on preparation of resource action plans and strategies needed to successfully manage and protect marine natural ecosystems and environmental conditions; providing technical assistance to natural resource managers regarding marine management policy and science-based conservation. (You must include the number of hours worked per week within your resume.)
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
To qualify based on education, you must submit a legible copy of transcripts from an accredited institution with your name, school name, credit hours, course level, major(s), and grade-point average or class ranking. Transcripts do not need to be official, but if you are selected for this position and you used your education to qualify, you must provide official transcripts before you begin work.
If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet qualification requirements, you must show that your education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
