Facing Homelessness Seeks an Interim Executive Director

The Facing Homelessness Board of Directors is seeking to hire an interim executive director to lead the organization and help guide us through critical developmental work in preparation for hiring a new permanent E.D. Should an Interim E.D. meet and resonate with the Facing Homelessness mission and team, the role can transition to permanent E.D.

About Facing Homelessness

Facing Homelessness began its journey in 2010, with a belief that we can and will end homelessness when we invite community to be a part of the solution. Our programs are designed to humanize the individual and bring people closer to one another in compassion and kindness. Together, we reduce fear of the unknown and build our collective capacity for empathy and action. Each interaction is an entry point for community members to contribute their unique passions and skills to end homelessness. Current Context

Facing Homelessness is at a pivot point after four years of extraordinary development and growth. Before transitioning to new leadership, our board and staff have the opportunity to accomplish a number of important things:

● Answer fundamental questions about the kind of change the organization seeks to achieve, the best strategic activities to implement, the most prudent evaluation plans to measure our outcomes, and how to remain adaptable to changing social and economic landscapes around us.
● Ensure we have an optimal organizational structure and all necessary policies and protocols in place.
● Identify how we incorporate the voice of persons experiencing homelessness in our work.
● Prioritize social and racial equity, and review how we center it in our programs.

What We’re Seeking in an Interim E.D.

You are a demonstrated leader who can oversee and mentor staff regarding day to day programs and provide counsel to the board and staff on bigger-picture strategic issues prior to hiring a permanent E.D. You understand and have experience working on structural equity, diversity, and inclusion. You embrace the Facing Homelessness mission and bring compassion and kindness into your daily work. You will work closely with board and staff to:

● Shepherd the organization and staff during a time of transition and uncertainty.
● Ensure implementation of our programs and mission with input and support from staff and board.
● Ensure effective financial management and oversight in alignment with our annual budget and in collaboration with the staff and board.
●Support our staff in maintaining strong relationships with funders and donors, as well as support a new and very talented development manager with the support of Ostara, our fundraising consultant.
● In partnership with the board, help assess the current state of the organization and identify what’s needed to ensure that a new permanent E.D. will be set up for success.
● Support team building and offer problem-solving approaches to a committed group of staff now working remotely.
● Lean in and personally engage compassionately with the people who come to our Window of Kindness at our office, volunteers, Block Project host families and service providers, and other key stakeholders involved in our work.
● Expect and engage in a supportive, transparent relationship with the board.

Qualifications

● Alignment with Facing Homelessness’s mission, programs, and values.
● Experience as an interim leader, executive director, and/or consultant in the nonprofit field.
● Experience with change management, organizational development, strategic planning, and outcome-based evaluation.
● Experience supervising/managing staff and collaborating with a board of directors.
● Working knowledge of and experience with nonprofit fiscal management.
● Understanding of institutional bias, and how racial disparities disproportionately impact people experiencing homelessness, strongly preferred.
● Experience leading initiatives or organizations focused on economically, socially, or racially diverse communities is strongly preferred.

Compensation

When you apply, please indicate your interest and availability, including hours per week, and your typical approach to compensation when working as an interim E.D. with nonprofits.

Timeframe

We anticipate this position to start in June and to continue for six to nine months. The Interim role can transition to a permanent Executive Director role following a completion of the work and processes agreed upon during the Interim phase of our relationship, and if the Interim E.D.’s leadership and skill set meets the needs of Facing Homelessness’s leadership requirements.
