The Washington State Department of Natural Resources is looking for an outdoor enthusiast to join the Fuels Reduction Module.

The Fuels Reduction Module travels throughout the year to various areas in Southeast Region to work with DNR programs to determine and complete prescription needs of local forests. By completing large fuels reduction projects, the crew is creating and conserving healthy forests for local wildlife and recreational opportunities. The module is able to do so using equipment such as a GPS, chipper, saws, and various hand tools.

The individual to fulfill this team member role must be able to stay motivated and work in quiet, rural areas for 10 hours a day. Strong communication skills will aid in this position’s daily interactions with Department staff, cooperators, private landowners, and the general public regarding the mission and work of the Department.  If you want to make a difference and have an impact on local communities, help shape the health of forests in Washington State, and build a more resilient forest for future generations, this is the job for you.

Who are we looking for?

The right candidate has:

  • Ability to use forestry instruments, GPS, motorized forestry equipment (chipper, chainsaw, etc.)
  • Ability to communicate effectively and use good judgment.
  • Requires both office (10%) and field work (90%). Duty assignments will be throughout the region. Position requires work on uneven broken terrain in various weather conditions using forestry tools and equipment to conduct tasks. Ability to operate a 4X4 pickup sized vehicle, ATV (4-wheeler) and snowmobile, in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
  • Requires frequent travel throughout the region for temporary assignments, meetings, and fire assignments.
  • Requires a valid driver’s license and have two years of driving experience. This position requires driving as an essential function.  Employees who drive for state business, whether in a state or privately-owned vehicle, are required to possess a valid license as defined in policy PO02-006 and abide by all other driver responsibility requirements. Finalists and/or interview candidates will be asked to provide a driving record from all states in which they have held a license during the past three years.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED and three months natural resource related experience.
The Location

In the eastern shadow of the Cascade Mountains along Interstate 90, lies Ellensburg Washington, a college town that is just a hop, skip and a jump away from most everything. Check out some great events in downtown such as Buskers in the Burg, Dachshunds on Parade, First Friday Art Walk, and Winterhop BrewFest. Take in all the excitement of the World Famous Ellensburg Rodeo every Labor Day Weekend or the simplicity of the local Farmers Market from May until October. Ellensburg has a little bit of excitement for everyone.
