We are seeking four (4) highly motivated and experienced field technician to work alongside a diverse team promoting the conservation of Washington State’s salmonid population.  This opportunity is located in Skagit River Basin.

This recruitment is for four (4) 2 to 4 –months in the Fish Program, Region 4, Fish Management.  Anticipated start date is September 01, 2020 and the positions are expected to continue through October 31, 2020 with possibility of extension through the end of the year. The duty station is the La Connor field Office located at 111 Sherman Street, La Connor, WA . 98257.

Duties

These positions will primarily be responsible for conducting spawning ground surveys for Chinook, coho, and chum salmon, biological sampling of salmon carcasses, and some data entry tasks.  Survey duties of this position will include solo walking or floating streams and rivers and locating and accurately identifying, enumerating, and recording live and dead freshwater spawning stage adult salmonids, and salmonid redds.  Found carcasses will be sampled regardless of the state of decay.  Carcass sampling includes collecting and handling carcasses and identifying carcass species and gender, measuring fork length, checking the carcass for physical or implanted hatchery marks (usually adipose clip and/or CWT), collecting scales, collecting fish “snout” for CWT present fish, and severing carcass caudal fin to indicate carcass was sampled. These positions may also participate in fisheries monitoring activities.

Working Conditions
Roughly 95% of work will be conducted in the field and 10% will be in the office.  However work load and schedules will vary based on weather conditions.  The work assignments may include weekends, evenings, holidays, and overtime. Flexible hours are required to address the changing conditions related to weather, stream flow and fish numbers. Work hours can vary daily and can be very long during periods of inclement weather and high stream flows and while surveying in remote areas.  Potentially dangerous conditions exist including high and swift water, working in jet boats, rafting, walking long distances while navigating uneven and slippery stream conditions and dense riparian areas with downed trees/logs in both, working in all weather conditions, working with large sharp knives and hooks and gaffs for carcass sampling, and encounters with wildlife and dogs.  You must be able and willing to work in all weather conditions. You must be able to walk/hike up to 8 miles in a single day in chest or hip waders and in raingear while carrying survey supplies.  You must be able safely and proficiently work in swift water and demonstrate familiarity and comfort working in swift water environments.  Previous professional experience rowing rafts, catarafts, or pontoon boats is highly desired.

This position is in the bargaining unit represented by the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals and is subject to the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the State of Washington, Department of Fish & Wildlife, and the Washington Association of Fish & Wildlife Professionals.”
Qualifications

Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school science and two years of experience as a Scientific Technician 1.
OR
Graduation from high school or GED including one year of high school and two years of laboratory or field experience as an assistant to a biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute, year for year, for experience, provided the course work includes at least six semester or nine quarter hours of natural science classes.

Required Experience:

  • Ability to work closely and productively with others in close proximity for extended periods (long car rides and days on the jet boat)
  • Ability to identify spawning stage Chinook, coho, and chum
  • Ability to locate and accurately record observations of salmonid redds
  • Ability to accurately and legibly record observations and measurements
  • Previous experience wading and crossing streams
  • Ability to spend a full work day outdoors in any weather conditions
  • Ability to survey up to 8 miles of stream on foot in a single day and be able to repeat the same the next day.
  • Possess valid drivers license
  • Two or more years professional salmonid spawning ground survey experience.

Desired but not required qualifications:

  • 3 or more seasons previous experience performing spawning ground surveys
  • 3 or more seasons previous experience sampling salmonid carcasses
  • Ability to row rafts or catarafts/pontoon boats in moving water
  • Experience entering data to Microsoft Excel
