The Sierra Club is seeking a Senior Campaign Director, International Climate and Policy.
Context: Ensures the successful development and execution of the International Climate and Policy Campaign by establishing overall priorities, strategies and objectives and overseeing staff and a budget of over $500,000.
Scope: The Senior Campaign Director is responsible for developing overall campaign strategy and ensuring campaign effectiveness with the Campaign’s Volunteer Lead including multiple related programs, and with International allies who are aligned with the vision and values of Sierra Club. Collaborates with the Office of Advancement, to raise funds and build financial support through effective relationships with donors and foundations. Provides leadership, campaign direction, strategic and technical expertise and guidance to staff, volunteers and various Club entities to insure overall campaign objectives are successfully implemented. Manages and supports staff to implement work plans, communicates priorities and benchmarks, provides leadership, and leads the International team. Works closely with key states that are priorities for the campaign. Represents the Sierra Club to media, community leaders, allies, international partners, and the public. The International Director will do all of the above in a way that embodies the Sierra Club’s values and centers equity, inclusion, justice and movement building. They will have a strategic vision for how to leverage the International Campaign work to advance justice, equity, and inclusion while supporting local partners in building long-term power.
Job Activities:
Leads process to formulate and implement campaign strategy for multiple campaign components. Guides analysis of campaigns related to climate issues of international importance and directs other national staff and volunteer leaders.
In order to advance a shared vision of the International work, develop goals & strategies plan for the campaign in collaboration with key program staff, advancement staff, communications staff, and volunteer leaders to articulate the campaign’s goals and the resources needed to achieve them. Executes the campaign to meet the overall goals articulated in the Campaign plan. Evaluates campaign effectiveness through an equity lense and leads the campaign team in making strategic decisions, as necessary, regarding course corrections.
Collaborate with the Sierra Club Foundation, the Executive Office and the Office of Advancement to cultivate and steward relationships with individual donors and foundations that raise and expand existing funding. Provide content and review grant proposals and reports for funders, supporters and relevant membership and online appeals.
Oversee and balance annual budget, adjusting expenses based on quarterly revenue projections, ensuring we are providing donors a meaningful return on investment, achieving our stated goals, and aligning resources with strategy on an ongoing basis. Provide detailed expectations of the outcomes that allocated resources are intended to produce, through a values driven/data informed analysis.
Act as an effective and skilled manager. Supervises, directs, develops and provides general and technical guidance to staff which includes assigning work and establishing standards and work priorities; supports staff in meeting individual goals; guiding and coaching staff for individual professional development; establishing performance objectives and expectations and providing ongoing performance feedback, preparing and conducting formal performance planning and evaluation; effectively recommending salary, hiring and promotion decisions.
Ensures internal communication is coordinated with various arms of the Sierra Club including the organizing, online and legal departments, other campaigns, federal policy, communications, and chapters, as necessary.
Identifies opportunities to promote campaign objectives by representing the Sierra Club to external audiences through public speaking and establishing and maintaining professional contacts. Represents Sierra Club’s work in international coalitions, networks, and other venues.
Serve as a senior staff leader, including advising the National Director of Campaigns and serving on organizational leadership teams as needed. Provide regular strategic updates and program progress reports to the executive staff and boards of directors of Sierra Club and the Sierra Club Foundation Boards when requested.
Performs miscellaneous duties as directed.
Knowledge and Skill:
Master degree in Environmental Studies, Political Science or a closely related field. Advanced degree preferred.
5-7 years of campaign or field management experience as a Representative within the Sierra Club, or in another comparable position or in another organization.
A commitment to the Sierra Club’s values, the Jemez principles and an ability to lead the integration of equity, justice and inclusion throughout team practices & management.
Expert knowledge in the strategic planning and direction of campaigns and programs.
Excellent demonstrated written and oral communication skills.
Substantial prior experience and demonstrated ability and effectiveness working with volunteers.
Valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving records, and proof of auto insurance required.
