Communications Director
Job Announcement
July 23, 2020

We are seeking a Communications Director to join our team working to protect the Salish Sea, take action to stop climate change, fight pollution and spearhead a dynamic environmental education program with students in grades K-12.

RE Sources is a non-profit environmental education and advocacy organization based in beautiful Bellingham, Washington. RE Sources protects the communities, creatures, and wild places of the Salish Sea region. Our key priorities are to combat climate change, protect the Salish Sea and the waters that feed into it, fight pollution, educate for change, end waste, encourage civic engagement, and watchdog environmental threats to our communities.

RE Sources stands against racism, white supremacy and the ingrained structures and institutions that enable and perpetuate them. Indigenous, Black and other communities of color are frequently the most harmed by environmental degradation. We envision a future where every person benefits from clean energy, less pollution and thriving outdoor places.

We face major environmental threats in the Pacific Northwest. As a grassroots environmental advocacy nonprofit, we believe greater public insistence and engagement is necessary to pressure elected officials, businesses and fellow community members to take the necessary level of action to turn the tide. RE Sources works to create strategic opportunities to protect our region’s environment and communities. To meet the issues at the proper scale, we must continually grow our base of support and maintain engagement with each supporter.

The job will entail:

● Ensuring overall coordination of external communications aimed at protecting our region’s environment, the climate and changing the structures that underlie environmental injustice and harm communities;
● Planning and implementing an enhanced, high-impact digital strategy for advocacy, education and fundraising in order to maximize programmatic impact and supporter engagement, including social media, digital marketing and more;
● Writing and editing content, campaign information, fundraising materials, leading on media strategy and more; and,
● Contributing to the development of programmatic strategies, campaign messages and donor engagement.

Qualifications:

● At least five years of experience in advocacy communications.
● A strong background in digital communications.
● A deep commitment to protecting the planet and fighting injustice.
● Strong interpersonal skills, a positive attitude and the ability to nimbly shift strategies in a rapidly changing world.
● Ace writing skills.
● Experience supervising staff and volunteers.

The Communications Director is a full-time position based in Bellingham, Washington. The scope of our mission is broad and the work is demanding, but the working environment at RE Sources is fun, inspiring, and extremely rewarding. We offer a flexible work schedule, a generous paid time off program, and opportunities for professional growth. Our staff are passionate about protecting the environment, maintaining a supportive, friendly work culture, and modeling our values of equity, inclusion, diversity, respect, honesty and empowerment.
