Our topic this month is Hubble Science at Two Decades.
Hubble has entered its 21st year of operation. During that time, its results have launched new fields of study, revolutionized others, and upended many a cherished theory.
Professor Bruce Balick in the Astronomy Department at the University of Washington will take us on a tour of the major Hubble results starting from the discoveries of new planets to views of the cosmos when the Universe was only a toddler beginning to make the first generation of stars (that is, 3% of its current age). He will give a recap of the refurbishment mission to Hubble in 2009 and end his presentation by giving us a glimpse of Hubble’s successor, the James Webb Space Telescope and its capabilities.
