When is the most economical building design also the most sustainable?
The goal of Walsh Construction’s Asset Management and Preservation (AMP) Initiative is to find the ‘sweet spot,’ between higher up-front costs and long-term payback from a more efficient and valuable building. The key is to have better choices at the earliest opportunity. AMP helps Walsh clients unlock the “Return on Investment” (ROI) of their sustainable building by integrating detailed analysis of life-cycle cost, material and systems choices, versus resource conservation (energy, water, future work) in relation to the Total Cost of Ownership. This information connects and leverages the strengths of the design team early in the process. AMP applies to existing buildings, renovations and new construction.
About the Presenter:
Derek Johnson, LEED AP, Lifecycle Cost Analyst and Preconstruction
Walsh Construction Co.
Derek joined Walsh six years ago as a project engineer after 12 years of active duty as an Army Officer. Derek is a West Point graduate with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and a Masters in Management & Leadership. As Construction Superintendent, Derek led the effort to achieve LEED Platinum certification for Salishan 7 – one of largest LEED for Homes Platinum projects in the country at the time. Derek’s work on job-site coordination, safety and quality control also kept the project well-organized and safe. At Greenfire Campus in Seattle, Derek was responsible for managing many of the project’s green requirements, as well as the building’s envelope and energy performance. Greenfire Campus recently received ENR’s Merit Award for Green Building and is a LEED project on track to achieve a Platinum certification. Derek will assist the team with lifecycle analyses of products, components and systems in the planning phase.
