WDFW is dedicated to protecting native fish and wildlife, and providing sustainable fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities for millions of residents and visitors. Working throughout the state, WDFW’s employees–field biologists, enforcement officers, land stewards, lab technicians, customer service representatives and others—manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species, maintain nearly a million acres of public wildlife lands, provide opportunities for recreational and commercial fishing, wildlife viewing and hunting, protect and restore habitat and enforce laws that protect fish and wildlife resources. This recruitment is to fill one (1) full-time, non-permanent position within the Director’s Office, Legislative Affairs Division, located at the Natural Resources Building, Olympia, Thurston
County, WA.
JOB SUMMARY
The Legislative Intern will provide administrative support to the Legislative Assistant and Legislative Liaison. The incumbent will assist with tracking state legislative activities in their assigned area of focus, as well as conduct legislative research. Duties include summarizing reports or bills, researching and drafting responses to constituents, and monitoring and reporting on committee meetings. There will also be an opportunity for the incumbent to job shadow at WDFW. The internship will provide a student with a better understanding of public service and the legislative process in Washington. The Legislative Internship is a paid, full-time commitment. The internship must be taken for undergraduate academic credit at a four-year college or university. Credit amounts and other academic requirements are determined by the school.

DUTIES:
Throughout the course of an internship, participants are asked to handle a wide variety of duties essential to the legislative process and designed to provide them with a valuable educational experience. Some of these responsibilities include:
 Conducting research on specific issues
 Monitoring and reporting on committee meetings for legislators
 Researching and drafting responses to constituent inquiries
 Summarizing reports or bills
 Assisting with mail and telephone contacts
The experience and knowledge acquired during the state legislative session can be a great asset and may lead to exciting career opportunities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Working environment is a busy office setting. Varying degrees of activity occur in the common areas during working hours; most tasks will involve sitting at a desk and working on a computer. Incumbent must be able to work amid distraction.
This position normally works 8:00 am-5:00 pm, Monday-Friday, but may be required to occasionally work in excess of 40 hours per week or on weekends to meet deadlines during peak periods.
Anticipated start date is January 5, 2015
Anticipated end date is April 30, 2015
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Qualifications:
The internship is open to students enrolled for credit through an educational institution. The institution will provide all academic requirements and determine all final grades.
Knowledge of: Modern office practices, equipment, and software including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), proper grammatical construction, sentence and paragraph development and basic mathematics.
Ability to: follow directions, read, understand, interpret and apply policies and procedures, work with others, conduct research, work accurately with attention to detail, compile meaningful written reports and speak effectively.
Preferred/Desired Qualifications:
In the process of obtaining an Associate’s degree or higher in Political Science, Economics, International Relations, Business, Public Policy and Administration or related field from an accredited college or university.
