Hours of work: Various: 3–7 hour shifts, 1–3 days a week, Monday–Friday, 9am– 5pm Date needed: March 9, 2015 through June 30, 2015 Posting expires: February 3, 2015 About the Seattle Aquarium: The Seattle Aquarium is owned by the City of Seattle and under nonprofit management. The Aquarium currently serves over 825,000 visitors and 40,000 schoolchildren and their teachers annually. Guided by its mission of Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, the Seattle Aquarium has a realistic plan for phased growth based on record-setting attendance, membership and fundraising growth, an energized board of directors and professional management. The current annual budget is $12 million. Position overview: Seattle Aquarium Citizen Science Instructors will be working with a professional team of marine educators to provide an in-depth science program serving approximately 400 local high school students and their teachers. Duties include instructing diverse groups of high school students in varied topics including field-based data collection methods, identification of northwest intertidal species, and the scientific practices as defined by A Framework for K-12 Science Education. Primary job functions:  Conduct programs at the Aquarium, in the field and in formal classrooms for diverse groups of high school students and their teachers.  Teach lessons on field-based data collection methods, identification of northwest intertidal species, and scientific practices.  Work collaboratively in a team environment maintaining a high level of communication.  Maintain availability for agreed-upon dates through June 2015. Perform other related tasks as assigned, such as organization of materials and supplies, printing, assembling program kits and curriculum review. Required special knowledge, skills, training:  Washington State driver’s license or other state valid license and good driving record.  Excellent written and oral communication skills.  Basic computer skills.  CPR/first aid certification.  Able to work as part of team and/or independently.  Pass background check.  Strong organizational skills.  Demonstrated reliability, responsibility and enthusiasm.  Ability to be flexible in a rapidly changing work environment. Education:  Required: Completed high school and must be 18 years of age or older.  Desired: B.A. or B.S.in Education, Child Development, Recreation, Environmental Science, Biology or a related field. Experience:  Must have a minimum of two years’ experience teaching programs at a zoo/aquarium or other informal education facility, or in a school or classroom setting.  Strong knowledge of Northwest marine life preferred.  Experience working with diverse racial and socio-economic audiences. Working conditions:  Flexible schedule and ability to commit to the hours and dates of work above.  Must be able to spend long periods of time outdoors during all weather conditions (extreme heat or rain).  Must be able to sit, stand, walk and/or run for varied and extended periods of time while interacting with public.  Heavy to moderate vocal demands to project talks and announcements to direct an audience in loud areas.  Ability to lift at least 30 pounds.
