The Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) within the Department of Ecology is looking to fill a Local Source Control Monitoring Lead (Natural Resource Scientist 2) position. This position is located at our Headquarters Building in Lacey, WA but conducts work statewide.

This position conducts environmental monitoring in support of Local Source Control Programs in the Columbia River basin. Under administrative direction, defines the research needed and consults with agency management regarding goals and objectives, then performs specialized natural resource science research, and compiles available scientific literature and data to locate sources and track progress in reducing sources of toxic chemicals to the Columbia River in support of local source control programs.

We are looking for applicants who have stormwater monitoring experience, are independent, self-directed, possess a strong technical background and work well with others.

The mission of the Environmental Assessment Program (EAP) is to measure and assess environmental conditions in Washington State for the purpose of providing credible science to guide environmental decisions.

Some of the key work activities of the Local Source Control Monitoring position are:

• As the technical lead in the Environmental Assessment Programs for monitoring associated with local source control, coordinates with other Ecology/Local Source Control staff, provides environmental monitoring support to track sources of toxic chemicals in the Columbia River basin.
• Prepares quality assurance project plans (QAPPs) and scientific reports.
• Works closely with analytical laboratories to coordinate analysis of environmental samples including developing Request for Proposals for externally contracted analyses.
• Conducts surveys, analyzes and records conditions for collection of environmental samples for toxics chemical analysis in support of local source control programs.
• Conducts statistical analysis and quality assurance review of environmental data.
• Uses various software programs for data analysis (spreadsheets and statistics), and report preparation (word processing).
• Communicates sampling results to Local Source Control Coordinator, Local Source Control Partners, public, industry and other agency staff.
• Assists with data reduction, and entry of project data into Ecology’s Environmental Information Management System.
• Develops protocols and Standard Operating Procedures, defines record keeping and reporting procedures for conducting source tracing for toxic chemicals.
• Participates in cross program and agency local source control meetings.
• Participates in unit, section, and program committees and meetings as appropriate.
• Stays current on required safety training.

A Bachelor’s of Science degree with major study in chemistry, environmental science, or other closely allied field and 3 years of experience which includes environmental sampling, toxic chemicals and stormwater characterization.

Advanced educational degrees will substitute for the required experience as follows (Masters= 2 years; PhD= all 3 years), provided the major study was in one of the fields listed above.

Desired Qualifications:

Knowledge of scientific research methods.

Working knowledge of chemical properties and analytical methods.

Experience with spreadsheets and statistical software.

Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License.
