Job description
Seattle Tilth is a fast growing, dynamic organization that believes all people deserve access to healthy, nutritious food and that changing the way we grow, cook and eat food has the potential to transform people’s lives as well as the communities in which we live. Just Garden builds a just food system and a culture of gardening for all people by building subsidized food gardens for families with low incomes in their homes and community centers, educating gardeners, and celebrating our work. We have four large garden-building events in 2016. At each event, over 100 volunteers will work together to build 40 garden beds over four hours. Each garden recipient also receives hands-on gardening education, plants, seeds, fertilizer, and a copy of Seattle Tilth’s Maritime Northwest Garden Guide. Just Garden also seeks to provide ongoing support to program participants through quarterly seasonal gatherings. At these pot-luck evening gatherings, we provide a short, seasonally-appropriate workshop, as well as seeds and supplies and an opportunity to build community among gardeners.
Duties will include:
– Conduct outreach to 20+ organizations who serve low income populations in Federal Way, Burien, & Bellevue.
– Conduct a survey of each recipient of the 187 garden builds by Just Garden since 2010 to determine program impacts & rate of retention.
– Plan & execute seasonal gatherings of Just Gardeners, to include solicitation of donations for giveaway (seeds, compost, burlap, etc.), finding a venue & outreach to Just Garden participants.
– Recruit & retain 20 “super-volunteers” who will attend all four of our garden building events & act as the core leadership for the organization going forward.
– Conduct site visits to the homes of potential gardeners, ensuring the site is appropriate for a garden & assisting the gardener with agreements & in-processing paperwork.
– Coordinate with Just Garden Program Manager & Seattle Tilth staff in conducting hands-on organic gardening workshops for Just Garden program participants & in the planning and execution of four large garden-building events in 2016.
This is a full time, six month placement that requires occasional evening and weekend work. Benefits include:
- Living allowance: $1,195/month (before taxes)
- Training and experience
- Subsidized childcare provided by GAP Solutions Inc. (if qualified)
- Health Insurance (member only and only if no other health insurance coverage)
- Student loan forbearance (on qualifying loans)
- $2,865 Education Award provided by National Service Trust (upon successful completion of service term commitment and 900 hours of service)
