We are looking for 2-3 Vascular and Nonvascular Botanists for a short-term project in the North Cascades. These folks would be conducting botanical surveys and documenting all species of vascular and nonvascular plants, as well as noting specialized habitats. Surveys are to be completed based on standardized protocols for target species. Species requiring documentation include Region 6 Sensitive plants, Washington State listed invasive plants, as well as incidental occurrences of Survey and Manage, and Strategic species.
Work would include collecting and preserving plant specimens, photomonitoring, and determining forested plant associations. Previous experience with Survey and Manage vascular and non-vascular plant survey methodologies is desirable.
Qualifications:
Minimum of Bachelor’s degree in botany, biology, or natural sciences; Expertise with the technical keys in Hitchcock et al. “Flora of the Pacific Northwest” or “Flora of North America”, including proficiency with identification of species in Cyperaceae, Poaceae, and Asteraceae;
Knowledge of common species of bryophytes and lichens and the ability to distinguish these from rare species; Familiarity with the local flora of the north western Cascades, including recognition of most species by vegetative characteristics; Experience in use of aerial photos, USGS topographic map, compass (adjusted for declination), digital camera, and GPS; Quick at identifying and conducting field plant inventories in rough terrain.
Wage: Salary would be about: $3200 monthly
Expected Work Duration: Mid-June to end of July/mid-August (6 to 8 weeks total), or longer
depending on work load, performance and additional projects that may become available.
