Environmental Policy Internship
This is an ongoing opportunity. The Intern will work directly with the Conservation Committee chair and/or members on a relevant conservation issue that the committee has identified as a priority in the coming year. The position can be tailored to the students needs and could focus on education and research or community organizing or grassroots advocacy and lobbying decision-makers.
Issues that have been priorities recently (and often continue to be) include:
- Growth Management Act / land use / urban sprawl
- Shorelines Master Plan / shorelines regulations
- Shellfish Aquaculture in Puget Sound
- Biodiversity Management Areas conservation in the Lower White River area
- Funding for open spaces and parks, and policies that support creation and maintenance
- Climate Change policies and regulations
- coal trains/export
- Crude oil trains, transport and terminals & protecting estuaries
- agriculture preservation in Pierce County, ARL zoning, and floodplains by design
- plastic shopping bag ban ordinance in Tacoma
- Methanol plant at Port of Tacoma
- Mud Mountain Dam fish passage project
- Lake Kapowsin Aquatic Reserve proposal

The Conservation Committee typically meets at the University of Puget Sound in Thompson Hall, room 288 each month at 12pm on the 2nd Tuesday. All are welcome to attend. Come to a meeting and learn about what issues we are currently working!
