Intern (Community Service Aide II) Posting
Water Resources Education Intern at the Portland Water Bureau
The Portland Water Bureau Education Program is looking for a passionate and energetic intern to teach kids about drinking water and natural resources during field trips to the Bull Run Watershed.
We bring students (3rd grade through high school) on full-day field trips to the Bull Run, where they can test their drinking water, learn about how the forest helps protect that water, and walk about 500 stairs to tour the inside of a 1929 dam. As our intern, you would meet a lead Water Bureau educator at the school in the morning, ride the bus with the students (and give part of the introduction about the water system), set up equipment in Bull Run, lead activity rotations, and then ride the bus back to the school. You and the lead Water Bureau educator would work as a team to make the day successful.
Timeframe: This job is temporary. Hours will vary. Generally you need to be available from about 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM most weekdays from September 20 to November 4. (If you’re available sooner, we also have a few days of paid training and work available earlier in September.)
Pay: $15/hour. You can expect to work 140 – 160 hours total.
Car: You need to have one and be willing to use it to transport two bins of education materials to and from schools for each field trip.
Activity level: You must be willing to travel on a school bus and walk over rough terrain and up and down hundreds of stairs.
Extra qualifications: If you have current first aid and CPR certification, and/or you speak a language in addition to English, please say so in your resume. These extras aren’t required, but are helpful.
Please send a resume and one-page cover letter to anna.buckley@portlandoregon.gov by 5:00 PM on Monday, August 15. Please tell us about the following:
• Your experience in environmental education (please be specific about the ages of the students, the job you did, and how long you were at the job)
• Your interest in helping kids understand their drinking water
• Your experience with managing groups (including behavior management) in the outdoors
