Position Description

Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) Environmental Partnerships Team is seeking three graduate interns for the Customer Programs Division of the Customer Service Branch. These interns will learn about the Recycling, Composting and Public Place Litter & Recycling (PPLR) Programs. These interns will assist with recycling and composting outreach and education to Seattle businesses and multi-family residents. They will report to the Manager of one of these programs: Commercial Recycling & Composting, Multifamily Recycling & Composting, or Public Place Litter & Recycling.

Learning objectives include but are not limited to:

  • Gain skills and experience working in a professional workplace environment;
  • Gain skills providing customer service directly to the residents of Seattle;
  • Gain experience conducting audits of program elements;
  • Develop ability to monitor service issues; develop work plans, and track program performance;
  • Develop skills in customer service and communications strategies by working directly with customers, businesses, and community groups.

There are currently three (3) graduate internship opportunities available, projected to start late May or early June. These internships are for up to 18 months or graduation, whichever comes first. We require a minimum 1-year commitment for this internship.

Job Responsibilities

Under direct supervision, the interns will learn through supervised practical training and various aspects of community outreach in support of SPU’s Recycling, Composting & Litter Management Programs. Duties may include, but not be limited to:

  • Perform periodic site visits to provide education and perform outreach and field inspections at Seattle businesses and multi-family residences
  • Respond to inquiries, send emails, contact customers and contractors
  • Organize and manage inventory of posters, stickers, and supplies
  • Create custom flyers, posters, and various outreach materials for commercial and multi-family customers
  • Update program activity files, service and inventory database
  • Submit field activity requests.
Qualifications

Education: Applicants must be currently enrolled in graduate-level coursework, pursuing a degree related to Environmental Management, Communications, Public Administration, or Urban Planning, or a closely related field.

Applicants must be enrolled either part-time or full-time for the duration of the internship. Exception: Students do not need to be enrolled over the summer months, but will need to provide at the end of Spring Quarter proof of continuing and pre-registration for the Autumn session as applicable. Graduate students must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA.

Required experience/qualifications:

  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Highly skilled in Word and Excel
  • Ability to complete and maintain all appropriate program records and reports
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service.

Licensing and Other Requirements: A Washington State Driver’s license is required for this internship in order to operate a City vehicle to outreach events and site visits.

Additional Information

The ideal candidate shall possess:

  • Experience providing customer service
  • Demonstrated experience making educational presentations
  • Demonstrated experience producing educational materials
  • Experience managing website content
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, and take initiative
  • Experience using ARC GIS program


Hours: Basic work hours are between 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, but may flex for occasional weekend work. During school sessions, work hours will be scheduled to complement class schedules (14-20 hours per week). This internship may permit up to full-time (40 hours per week) during breaks and summer months.
