Environmental Training Specialist (AmeriCorps)

AmeriCorps Project Description

This project will leverage the support of an AmeriCorps member to provide environmental stewardship training and education as it relates to urban agriculture and equitable food access, and expand these programs in the community. Specifically, this position will increase the education and training of individuals engaged in our programming through the leadership of our Fruit Tree Stewardship program, ‘Work and Learn’ parties, Edible Gardens, and gleaning events.  Also, the member will help with community engagement efforts to share this information with broader audiences, specifically our ongoing efforts to reach more diverse communities and k-12 youth.  About Pierce Conservation District Pierce Conservation District is government that works. Member Key Essential Functions of the Position

This position will coordinate educational opportunities, teach classes for youth and adults, manage ‘work and learn parties’, build and sustain partnerships with other educational organizations, and conduct community engagement activities to further the reach of our program and our activities.  They will also be responsible for administering pre/post surveys to demonstrate learning and tracking responses.

Qualifications Required for This Position

• Interest in urban agriculture

• Experience serving with diverse communities

• Community organizing experience;

• Experience with conflict resolution and empowerment education

• Comfort and ability serving with a diversity of community members;

• Exceptional organizational skills and ability to multi-task;

• Ability to serve independently;

• Exceptional attention to detail and follow through;

• Expertise in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat;

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to organize and manage diverse activities and set priorities;

• Flexible and able to serve well under pressure;

• Ability to develop a positive service relationship with a variety of people including community members, landowners, elected officials, staff and volunteers;

• Has successful experience serving independently and in groups in both office and field settings;

• Demonstrated resourcefulness and strong problem-solving skills;

• Must be able to serve some non-standard hours, including evenings and weekends (with comp time);

• Valid, insurable driver’s license/record;

• Experience with gardening in a community garden preferred;

• Experience with social media technologies preferred

The service will occur in a variety of environments, including office settings, classrooms, and field locations.  The member must be comfortable serving outside in all weather conditions, including with large groups of youth.  Applicable field gear and equipment will be provided by PCD.  Work vehicles will also be provided, for use with a valid driver’s license.
