INDIGENOUS PEOPLES’ DAY ~ HONORING OUR WOMEN

State Capitol and Heritage Park

 

Olympia, Washington has joined a growing number of cities in the country to declare the second Monday of October, which was typically observed as Columbus Day, as Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

The local movement to officially celebrate Indigenous Peoples’ Day in Olympia began during the October 14, 2014 City Council meeting. On August 15th, 2015 City Council approved the resolution. On August 17th, Mayor (Pro Tem) Nathaniel Jones, presented the City’s proclamation to a crowd of supporters at an Indigenous Peoples’ Day rally.

This year (2017), Indigenous Peoples’ Day is Honoring Our Indigenous Women on Monday, October 9th:

10 am to 2 pm- Women Speakers at State Capitol

2 pm to 3 pm- Indigenous Dancers “Grand Entry” (from State Capitol down Capital Way to Heritage Park)

3 pm to 6 pm-

  • Open Mic and Entertainment at Heritage Park
  • Indigenous Art Display/ Artwalk
  • Indigenous Food Vendors
  • Indigenous merchant stands
  • Indigenous Information Tables

7 pm to 9 pm- Hosted Dinner at Squaxin Island Community Kitchen Tribal Council Speakers

Call out for Indigenous Dancers, Artists, and Vendors!
