PURPOSE:
Provide assistance to Maritime Environment and Sustainability staff to acquire, receive, organize, and present environmental data. Assistance with data analysis and evaluation for project and program planning, design, implementation, and monitoring. Environmental data management is critical to providing managers and port departments with accurate and accessible data and records for tracking and assessing progress on port environmental programs, goals, plans, and actions. Effective data management is also essential for communicating with local, state, and federal agencies, Treaty tribes, and citizens.

We are looking for a candidate committed to collaborative work, with the ability to assist environmental staff on contamination assessments and remediation actions, compliance with urban air quality, noise, and transportation requirements, green-house gas reduction actions, energy management, sustainable project development, habitat restoration, and waste reduction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following lists general functions and duties. Principal work and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Assist data manager with organization of comprehensive scope of environmental field data and entry of the data into the Port’s proprietary EMIS database
  • Assist in the identification, collection, and organization of environmental reports for the Maritime Environment and Sustainability department
  • Prepare other environmental programs data and documents as needed for port-wide access and archive records using MS SharePoint
  • Archive environmental documents as needed using MS SharePoint.
  • Develop information from the above activities for port internal and external communications and web site using existing information systems
  • Based on intern data management work, prepare an evaluation of data collection and use relating to a specific environment and sustainability program, including revised or new data management practices

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Working knowledge of current principles, techniques and terminology related to environmental data management systems
  • Knowledge of current local, state, and federal policies, procedures, and practices related to natural resource management, protection, conservation and remediation
  • Ability to organize  and interpret data, site development plans, survey data and maps, and technical reports
  • Ability to perform environmental data analysis and define environmental metrics, as required
  • Ability to analyze and evaluate data and present results clearly and effectively
  • Ability to prepare clear technical written materials, communicate effectively and make presentations.  A presentation to Maritime environmental and participating port staff will be given at the end of the internship to present findings.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Port staff, including program managers

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be enrolled or recently graduated (within the last 12 months) in undergraduate environmental engineering, environmental sciences, energy management, sustainability, environmental management, or related field,

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Completed or currently taking upper level classes in at least one of the disciplines identified above
  • Knowledge of MS SharePoint, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access
  • User level knowledge of ArcGIS preferred
  • Experience analyzing and evaluating environmental data and presenting summarized findings
  • Working knowledge of web design and layout using HTML and related web technologies
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be considered, applicants must submit the following information: 1) Fill out a Port of Seattle employment application. 2) Proof of internship eligibility attached to the application (current official or unofficial transcripts). 3) Provide a cover letter and resume and attach them to each application. The cover letter should explain how the internship fits with your education, learning plans and/or future career path. 4) A list of specific internship learning objectives attached to the application. 5) Optional, but encouraged: Work references and/or letters of recommendation from a school faculty member. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In order to be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled in school, about to enroll in school, or a recent graduate from an accredited degree program. Candidates must be able to maintain student status in an Undergraduate program throughout the duration of the internship unless recently graduated and are eligible for up-to twelve months post-graduation. Interns will be subject to all Port policies and procedures.
Driver’s License Requirement: 
A valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

Weekly Standard Hours:
This is a summer intern position expected to last for roughly three (3) months during the summer of 2016.  Normal work hours will typically be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Overtime Eligible:
This position is eligible for overtime pay.

Work Environment:
Will generally work in an office environment with site visits to Port properties.
