Graduate Intern – Maritime Environmental Planning and Open Space

PURPOSE:
Assist Maritime Environment and Sustainability staff in assessing and evaluating existing Port of Seattle public use open space areas, public shoreline access sites, and habitat sites. Provide analysis and recommendations for improvement of public use, shoreline access, and habitat sites, emphasizing increased community use/participation, interpretation, safety, asset investment, multiple use, and organizational partnerships. Candidates are expected to have experience with and academic knowledge relating to planning for industrial lands, maritime infrastructure, urban open space, natural resource conservation and enhancement, and public use/engagement.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
The following lists general functions and duties. Principal work and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Review existing Port of Seattle public open space, shoreline access, and habitat assets
  • Analyze and evaluate port development, management, and planning practices for these assets
  • Obtain and analyze community use and community perception data and information
  • Research and summarize environmental and planning information and literature relating to urban open space planning, industrial lands, habitat restoration, and related matters affecting port assets
  • Compile and interpret data, review with staff
  • Based on data and information, prepare written conclusions and recommendations emphasizing opportunities, challenges, and potential improvements to parks, public access, and habitat sites
  • Identify matters and issues for additional focused research, including potential changes in asset use and status
  • Complete other duties as assigned by Maritime Environment and Sustainability staff

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of current principles, techniques, and emerging practices for built environment, urban planning, public space design, re-use/redevelopment, and related topics
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant local, state, and federal plans, policies, procedures, codes, and laws
  • Ability to interpret data, technical plans, and prepare reports
  • Ability to communicate effectively, prepare written materials, and present information in meeting settings
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with public agency staff, public officials, program managers, private sector development sponsors, and concerned citizens

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must be enrolled in or recently graduated from (within 12 months) a graduate urban planning, landscape architecture, environmental sciences, sustainability, environmental management, or related field, graduate program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud, MS SharePoint, MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, GIS and other software preferred.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: To be considered, applicants must submit the following information: 1) Fill out a Port of Seattle employment application. 2) Proof of internship eligibility attached to the application (current official or unofficial transcripts). 3) Provide a cover letter and resume and attach them to each application. The cover letter should explain how the internship fits with your education, learning plans and/or future career path. 4) A list of specific internship learning objectives attached to the application. 5) Optional, but encouraged: Work references and/or letters of recommendation from a school faculty member. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: In order to be eligible for an internship, applicants must be enrolled in school, about to enroll in school, or a recent graduate from an accredited degree program. Candidates must be able to maintain student status in a Graduate program throughout the duration of the internship unless recently graduated and are eligible for up-to twelve months post-graduation. Interns will be subject to all Port policies and procedures.
Driver’s License Requirement: 
A valid Washington State Driver’s License, or the ability to obtain one, is required.

Weekly Standard Hours:
This is a summer intern position expected to last for roughly three (3) months during the summer of 2018.  Normal work hours will typically be scheduled Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Overtime Eligible:
This position is eligible for overtime pay.

Work Environment:
Will generally work in an office environment with site visits to Port properties.
