Summary of Duties
The Associate Planner performs a wide variety of professional level long-range planning and environmental work that includes, but is not limited to the following:
- Working with the public and elected officials on planning issues, and conducting research and providing detailed staff reports, planning studies, and recommendations.
- Manages grant development, implementation, budget and reporting
- Presents staff report or other planning information at a public hearing and meetings and responds to any inquiries.
- Conducts technical research studies and prepares statistical reports and recommendations for a variety of planning projects including drafting or revising local legislation and plans, projecting trends, monitoring socioeconomic changes or informing the public.
- Prepares and/or reviews proposed new ordinances and ordinance amendments. Drafts written comments for review by the Planning Commission and Board of County Commissioners.
- Provides staff support to appointed committees on planning and zoning issues or special studies.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Planning, Environmental Planning, Geography, Public Administration or a closely related field.
- Three years of professional level long range planning work experience, with an emphasis on public contact.
- Ability to utilize the personal computer and related software packages to perform word processing, information retrieval and tracking.
- Current Washington State Driver’s License or have requested and obtained an appropriate accommodation.
Desired Skills
The ideal candidate will posses the following knowledge and abilities:
- Master’s degree in Planning, Public Administration, Environmental Science, or related field.
- Experience working with the Growth Management Act, Shoreline Management Act Critical Areas Ordinances and other planning laws, policy and regulation development.
- Comprehensive knowledge of planning principles, practices, regulations, and techniques.
- Familiarity with watershed riparian systems, restoration planning and implementation.
- Familiarity with State and local water availability issues, watershed plans, and stream flow restoration legislation.
- Ability to conduct effective research and evaluate complex data to prepare clear and concise written and oral reports.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply work related codes, ordinances, legal property descriptions, and other regulations and guidelines.
- Knowledge of local government and political decision-making processes.
- Ability to develop and write plans based on an analysis of data and ongoing citizen and agency input.
- Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups regarding complex or controversial planning policies or regulations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other staff, property owners, developers, contractors, public officials, the general public, and representatives of other agencies.
