Program Supervisor for Environmental and Sustainability Education
$49,197-$57,879 annually

Position Overview
This position provides leadership, guidance and resource development for the state’s pre K-12 education system, and focuses on the areas of integrated ESE. This position connects and integrates statewide environmental and sustainability efforts. The efforts work in collaboration with all subject areas within the Learning and Teaching Division, and especially with OSPI’s science and social studies teams. This position works with OSPI, the state’s nine regional educational service districts (ESDs), state environmental, science, and social studies educator associations, informal environmental educators, sustainability educators, science educators, community based organizations and school districts. This position works with the aforementioned entities to identify technical assistance needs. This position works to provide targeted support and guidance focused on effective integrated environmental and sustainability instruction and programs, which includes state initiatives, proviso work and assessment processes.

Key Responsibilities
Oversee the statewide development, revision and implementation support system for the Washington K-12 Integrated Environmental and Sustainability Learning Standards, as well as strategies in the Environmental and Sustainability Literacy Plan.

  • Provide leadership for building statewide capacity for implementation of the Washington State Environmental and Sustainability learning standards, pre K-12 curriculum planning and development and effective instructional/assessment system practices.
  • Develop, conduct and oversee professional development for educators on related state learning standards, and best practices in instruction for environmental and sustainability education.
  • Establish and maintain direct liaison support, as well as agency representation, with key content-specific national and state education associations and agencies.
  • As resources and time allow, represent OSPI by serving on related advisory committees.
  • Serve as a member of the Learning and Teaching Science/ESE team. Provide support and input as needed to areas including (but not limited to) science standards and assessments, professional development, website management and technical support to the field.
  • Serve as a content advisor with assessment system supports.
  • Administer and manage federal, state and privately funded projects and grants.
  • Occasionally travel across the state and nationally to facilitate meetings, attend conferences and conduct onsite reviews.
  • Administer statewide educator/student/school awards including Washington State’s U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools award program and selection of delegates to the annual National Youth Science Camp.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental and sustainability education, or related field.
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, environmental and sustainability education initiatives in Washington State and/or nationally.
  • Experience delivering professional learning trainings and workshops to a variety of diverse audiences. This includes writing correspondence and preparing presentations related to environmental and sustainability education in Washington State, as well as communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholder groups.
  • Project, budget and grant management experience.

 

Desired Qualifications:

  • Master’s (or advanced) degree in environmental and sustainability education, or related fields.
  • Five (5) years of K-12 teaching experience and/or school district or relevant leadership experience in environmental, sustainability, science or social studies education.
  • Knowledge of educational policy and law for state, federal and school district educational systems.

 

Compensation
The annual compensation for the position is $49,197-$57,879 per year at the current 0.75 FTE funding rate. The position reduces to a 0.5 FTE funding rate on July 1, 2019, and its salary will subsequently adjust to $32,798-$38,586 per year. Compensation ultimately depends upon experience, educational background and qualifications. This position serves at the pleasure of the Superintendent, and is Civil Service Exempt. This position is not represented by a bargaining unit.
