Fundraising & Development Internship – Spring 2019

Organization Description: Citizens for a Healthy Bay (CHB) is a community-based organization that engages citizens in the cleanup, restoration and protection of Commencement Bay, surrounding waters and habitat. CHB works cooperatively with other nonprofits, local, state and federal government agencies, tribes and private foundations in accomplishing its goals and objectives.

About the position: Citizens for a Healthy Bay is seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic individual who wants to gain more knowledge about nonprofit fundraising and events. The position will provide qualified applicants with substantial experience through events planning, donor cultivation, fundraising strategy, and a fundamental knowledge of nonprofit management and program implementation.

Responsible to: Communications & Development (C&D) Manager

Time Commitment: Applicant should be able to commit 8-14 hours per week during the 9am-5pm workweek and a three-month commitment. Increased hours can lead to increased responsibility.

This is an unpaid internship. Please arrange with your relevant university department contact to apply for and receive course credit.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist in donor stewardship by building and implementing fun, new, and creative donor outreach strategies
  • Contribute to donor outreach by assisting in donor appreciation initiatives and fundraising mailings
  • Conduct prospect research on potential event sponsors and donors.
  • Support C&D Manager with event logistics including program schedule, auction and registration systems for the annual auction fundraiser held on April 13, 2019.
  • Work within CRM database to manage and track current and prospective donor information
  • Update donor database and maintain accurate records
  • Play an integral role in membership renewal processes
  • Contact members via phone and/or e-mail for event invitations and to request new contact information; make appropriate database updates
  • Research best practices for membership maintenance and advancement
  • Assist Executive Director in fundraising tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • People skills and time management skills are a must
  • Demonstrated communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Event planning and project management experience a plus
  • Exemplary phone etiquette; friendly and courteous
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs like Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program focusing in Nonprofit Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred, although not required
  • Demonstrated interest in environmentalism, conservation, or environmental justice a plus
