TITLE: Youth Education and Outreach Assistant, Walk N Roll Program

HOURS OF SERVICE: 8 AM to 5 PM, Mon.–Fri. with frequent evening & weekend hours.

POSITION DESCRIPTION: Intercity Transit’s Walk N Roll Program supports education and outreach activities to encourage the use of walking, biking and transit (bus) to build life-long skills and independence to diverse youth and families. An AmeriCorps Member is being sought to engage youth and families in a number of walking and biking activities, presentations, and learning opportunities in four school districts within our service area. Some tasks include teaching middle school youth basic bike mechanics (we will train) and how to ride safely on roads. Members will have the opportunity to develop partnerships, recruit and manage volunteers, create outreach materials, provide educational programming, and measure program successes through metrics.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND RELATED TASKS:

Work 1:1 with middle and high school youth to teach basic bike mechanics and bike safety.

Work with school officials, students, parents & civic leaders to support walking and biking programs.

Assist with monthly walk and bike to school events representing Intercity Transit.

Give classroom presentations and lead field trips on public transportation to K-12 students.

Develop visual aids and teaching tools to accompany curriculum.

Work with community partners to adopt, sustain, and promote the program.

Help plan and promote community events and outreach activities.

Help Intercity Transit document curriculum, processes and procedures to support the program.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants should have an interest in and enjoy working with youth and families.

Able to walk up to two miles and ride a bike for up to 20 miles.

Willingness to learn basic bicycle safety and be confortable biking with traffic.

Able to obtain a valid Wahsington drivers license and learn to drive a large van with trailor.

Have acceptable 5-year driving history that meets agency’s hiring criteria, and maintain acceptable driving record during service.

Able to lift up to 30 pounds and do repetitive motions that involve grasping.
