This position is located at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) is located 9.1 miles south-southwest of Tacoma, Washington, and is a training and mobilization center for all services and is the only Army power projection base west of the Rocky Mountains. The facility is under the U.S. Army Joint Base Garrison, and includes the U.S. Army’s Fort Lewis and the U.S. Air Force’s McChord Air Force Base. JBLM is 90,000 acres with one of the largest remaining intact forest areas in the Puget Sound basin.

The Forestry Technician (Timber Sales and Inventory) will perform a variety of technical forestry operations, including timber marking (predominately), timber cruising, forest inventory cruising, and noxious weed control. Assignments require a background of technical knowledge based on intensive training and diversified experience in forestry methods and practices.

Required Qualifications: 

  • The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the United States by proposed start date. CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license by the employment start date. A valid driver’s license must be maintained for continued employment.
  • A BS/BA in forestry, conservation biology, or related field.
  • At least one years’ work experience in forestry.
  • Experience carrying out field inventories such as pre- and post-harvest cruises, stand exams, measurements.
  • Ability to conduct strenuous fieldwork in rough terrain and adverse weather conditions.
  • Familiar with the trees/forests of the Pacific Northwest.
  • Experience with global positioning systems / field data recorders.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Experience doing field data collection, conducting timber surveys.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Experience with computers, including conventional business software, global positioning systems and ArcGIS software.
  • Experience working on military installations.
  • A State of Washington herbicide applicators license or a willingness to get one.
