Deadline: April 27, 2012

Washington Sea Grant announces an exciting opportunity to help shape the future of Washington’s ocean and coastal policies.  The Marc Hershman Marine Policy Fellowship offers graduate students a first-hand experience in crafting marine and natural resource policies.  Beginning October 2012, five qualified students will spend one year working in Olympia, Seattle or Tacoma, Washington with host offices working on ocean and coastal science and management issues.

Graduate students who attend Washington universities and are enrolled in a marine-related field, including policy, law, social sciences, oceanography and fishery sciences, are encouraged to apply.  Fellows may be involved in working on marine policy questions from a variety of scientific, legal, social or economic perspectives.  2012 host offices are the state Department of Natural Resources, Department of Health, Department of Ecology and the Puget Sound Partnership, and The Nature Conservancy.  Preliminary projects identified for this year include coastal hazards, marine spatial planning, harmful algal blooms, pathogens reduction and control, and marine protection strategies in Puget Sound.
