Interested in engaging our youth in the natural world?  Enjoy teaching others how to observe and identify wildlife?  Please come to one of our “Eye on Nature Volunteer Trainings” then volunteer during student field trips this spring! 

“Eye on Nature” is a   Field Study at the Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge. Starting in mid-April, students will participate in a 3 – 3 1/2 hour field study at the refuge. With community volunteers, students will engage in NatureMapping activities to aid in tracking the changing phenology of common refuge wildlife species.

What: Learn the basic skills of leading Nature Mapping activities and working with school groups. Each volunteer will be placed with 6-8 students for the field work.
When: April 13, 1:30-3:30 or April 16, 9am-11am for the volunteer training, then sign up for one or more field day throughout April, May, and June to lead a student group.
Where:  Trainings and field studies will be at Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge (see attached flier for more details)


Program Goals:

  • Educate up to 700 3-12th  grade students on the importance of the NNWR and on its historic estuarine habitat restoration project;
  • Engage students in “Fostering Outdoor Observation Skills” and NatureMapping activities through field studies at the refuge;
  • Frame  watershed studies and water quality monitoring activities in a larger context of our local region and ecosystems.
